2.14. Final Energy Demand in Other Sectors

Energy demand by other sectors encompasses consumption in household, services, agriculture and construction indu-stry. Table 2.14.1. gives the trends in energy products con-sumed by these sub sectors over the period 2004 to 2009.

Figure 2.14.1. shows the trends in energy demand over the period 1988 to 2009. The energy consumption by other sec-tors decreased by 0.7 percent from the previous year. This sector increased its consumption of fuel wood and biomass, natural gas, steam and hot water, and other renewables, while the consumption of other energy products decreased.

The highest increase, of 7 percent, was recorded in the con-sumption of fuel wood and biomass (pellets, briquettes and charcoal). The consumption of natural gas increased by 2.6 percent, of steam and hot water by 1.2 percent and of other renewables (energy of sun, geothermal energy and biofuels) by 0.2 percent. The consumption of other energy forms decreased: coal consumption by 8.4 percent, consumption of liquid fuels by 5.4 percent and consumption of electricity 1.8 percent.

Over the period 2004 to 2009 energy consumption in other sectors had a slightly upward trend at an average annual rate of 0.3 percent. In this period the growth was recorded in consumption of electricity and natural gas, while the consumption of other energy forms decreased. The fastest decrease was in coal consumption at an average annual rate of 11.7 percent. The consumption of liquid fuels decreased at an average rate of 3.5 percent per annum, consumption of fuel wood and biomass decreased at an average annual rate of 2.1 percent, and consumption of steam and hot water at an average annual rate of 1.3 percent. Contrary to this, electricity consumption and natural gas consumption grew at average annual rates of 3.1 percent and 2.2 percent respectively.

Figure 2.14.2. shows the shares of energy forms consumed in the other sectors in 2004 and 2009. The characteristic of structural changes that took place over the six year observed period is increasing share of electricity and natural gas and reduction of shares of other energy forms. The share of elec-tricity grew by 4.6 percent, from 30.2 percent in 2004 up to 34.8 percent in 2009. At the same time, the share of liquid fuels decreased by 5.2 percent, from 29.5 percent in 2004 down to 24.3 percent in 2009. Also, natural gas increased its share by 2.2 percent, so in 2009 it reached 24.5 percent. The shares of other energy forms used by other sectors decrea-sed: the share of fuel wood and biomass by 1.2 percent so that in 2009 it was 9.6 percent; the share of steam and hot water decreased by 0.5 percent, from 6.8 to 6.3 percent; and the share of coal by 0.2 percent, so that in 2009 it was only 0.1 percent. Renewables (geothermal energy, solar energy and biofuels) made only 0.3 percent of the other sectors’

energy demand in 2009.

In this period the shares of services, construction sectors and agriculture increased while the share of households decreased. Households, which make the largest portion in the sector’s energy consumption, decreased their share from 64.7 to 61.6 percent. The share of services grew by 2.2 percent and in 2009 it reached 24.4 percent, while construction sector increased its share from 4.9 to 5.5 percent.
