ENERGY IN CROATIA 2009

2.3. Energy Import and Export

Table 2.3.1. gives the data on energy import in the period 2004 to 2009, and Figure 2.3.1. shows the trends in imports of specific energy forms in the period 1988 to 2009. Total import of energy in Croatia in 2009 decreased by 9.3 percent from the previous year. Most of the products were imported in smaller quantities, while the import of crude oil and fuel wood and biomass was increased. The import of crude oil increa-sed by 17.1 percent and of wood and biomass by high 259.4 percent, but the latter involves a very small quantity of energy.

The import of oil derivates and coal and coke was decreased by 41.1 percent and 40.9 percent respectively; the import of natural gas and electricity decreased by 14.9 percent and 7.1 percent respectively. Over the period 2004 to 2009 there was a decreasing trend in the Croatian energy import which declined by an average 0,8 percent per annum. The import of electricity and oil derivates had an upward trend with average annual rates of 7.4 percent and 3.1 percent respectively. The import of all other energy forms declined: the import of coal and coke decreased at an average rate of 7.2 percent per annum, the import of crude oil at an annual rate of 1.9 percent and import of natural gas at 0.2 percent annually.

Figure 2.3.2. shows the shares of individual energy forms in total imported energy in 2004 in 2009. In the period 2004 to 2009 certain structural changes occurred, so that the share of imported crude oil and coke and coal declined while the shares of other energy products increased. The share of crude oil fell form 59.6 to 56.5 percent, and the share of coal and coke from 10.6 to 7.6 percent. The share of imported oil derivates incre-ased from 12.6 to 15.2 percent, while the share of natural gas increased from 11.3 to 11.6 percent. Also, the share of electri-city increased from 6 to 8.9 percent. The share of biomass was only 0.12 percent in 2009.

Table 2.3.2. gives the shares of the energy forms exported from Croatia in the period 2004 to 2009. and Figure 2.3.3.

shows the energy export structure for the period 1988 to 2009. In 2009 total export of energy from Croatia increased by 10.8 percent. The increase was recorded in the export of all energy products, except for solid fuels where export fell by 36 percent. The export of electricity increased by 19.6 percent, of natural gas by 15.7 percent, of fuel wood and biomass by 13.8 percent and of oil derivates by 9.1 percent.

Over the period from 2004 to 2009 there was a growing trend in energy export at an average annual rate of 2.3 percent. The export of natural gas and electricity had a growing trend with average annual rates of 18.3 and 3.1 percent respectively.

The export of coal and coke decreased at an annual average rate of 11.6 percent, and the export of oil derivates decreased at a slower pace, at an average annual rate of 1.7 percent.
