l ' a u b e du troisibme mill6naire, le comit6 6ditorial des Acta Endoscopica s'est interrog6 sur la ligne de conduite a d o p t r e par la revue p e n d a n t b i e n t r t 30 ans d'activit6 et il propose h ses lecteurs un regard sur les dEveloppements futurs de ses activitrs.La crration d ' u n e revue e u r o p 6 e n n e peut parMtre utopique. A u d6but, elle s'est vouIue c o n f o r m e ~ l ' 6 v o l u t i o n de la p r a t i q u e de l ' e n d o s c o p i e , ~ son essor e n E u r o p e et dans le m o n d e et, lorsqu'enfin cette discipline est parvenue h maturit6, Acta Endoscopica a choisi de devenir la revue de formation continue en endo- scopie.
Elle rut ~ l'origine, l'organe d'expression privil6gi6 de la S M I E R (Soci6t6 M6di- cale d'Imagerie, E n s e i g n e m e n t et Recherche) la plus ancienne soci6t6 e u r o p r e n n e d'endoscopie. Multidisciplinaire, ouverte aux endoscopistes de sp6cialit6s diff6- rentes, cette soci6t6 s'adapta rapidement ~ leur n6cessaire autonomic. Le concept de multidisciplinarit6 fut modifi6 et accueillit des disciplines connexes : histo- pathologie, imagerie m6dicale, endoscopie interventionnelle et n o m b r e d'autres partenaires des sciences mrdicales fondamentales.
Ce partage des connaissances s'est exprim6 ~ travers des n u m r r o s ~t t h r m e s conduits avec comp6tence et esprit critique par des ~ Guest Editors,~ qui, sans insistance de notre part, ont accept6 de consacrer u n e part de leur temps prrcieux cette forme nouvelle de compagnonnage. A u n o m de nos abonn6s et de nos lec- teurs, nous les remercions pour leur grnrrosit6 et le srrieux dont ils firent preuve.
Le second d6fi des Acta Endoscopica rut de parier sur l'importance du drvelop- p e m e n t de l'endoscopie en E u r o p e et le besoin de d6velopper les contacts person- nels entre les praticiens de ce continent, l ' e n j e u 6tant de concilier excellence et diversit6. La SMIER, h l'initiative du Docteur F e r n a n d Vicari, a cr66 il y a 12 ans, /a Strasbourg le ~ Cours intensif a n n u e l d'endoscopie digestive - sous l'6gide du Conseil de l ' E u r o p e . La vitalit6 du cours, c o n d u i t ~ pr6sent par le Professeur G 6 r a r d Gay, confirme les t e n d a n c e s drcrites plus haut : u n partage des exp6- riences et des m r t h o d e s originales dans un cadre convivial pemettant de mieux se connattre et se comprendre sans exercer de contrainte sur l'emploi des langues.
Enfin, au t o u r n a n t du sircle, les protagonistes des Acta Endoscopica ont pro- pos6 un nouveau d6fi. D ' A f r i q u e francophone v i e n n e n t r r g u l i r r e m e n t en E u r o p e des scientifiques qualifi6s, souvent les plus favoris6s, qui attendent de nos congrrs u n m o y e n d ' a m r l i o r e r leur p r a t i q u e q u o t i d i e n n e m6dicale et e n d o s c o p i q u e . E n 1997, sous l'impulsion du Professeur Francis Klotz de l'H6pital Principal de Dakar, l'idre est n6e de d6placer vers l'Afrique des experts europ6ens drsireux de porter en pays drfavoris6s les fruits de leur exp6rience. L'adhEsion ~ ce projet a 6t6 consacrde lors des premieres J o u r n 6 e s de l ' A s s o c i a t i o n Africaine F r a n c o - phone de F o r m a t i o n Continue en H 6 p a t o - G a s t r o - E n t r r o l o g i e ( A A F F C H G E ) Dakar en mai 1998 puis cette a n n r e , ~ Marrakech sous la conduite remarquable du Professeur Na'fma Amrani.
Ici encore, comme ~ Strasbourg, les liens h u m a i n s se r6v616rent des conducteurs d ' 6 n e r g i e et le d6sir de convivialit6 rut attis6 par la d6couverte de p r o b l 6 m e s m6connus, ce qui contribua ~ u n e plus large ouverture d'esprit.
Les membres de la Soci6t6 Belge d ' E n d o s c o p i e Digestive, prdsid6e par le Pro- fesseur Jean-Claude Debongnie, revinrent de D a k a r enthousiasm6s et d6cid6rent d'organiser d6sormais, du moins j u s q u ' e n 2002, des journdes annuelles s6n6galo- belges, premier tdmoignage d ' u n courant d'6change r6gulier entre gastro-ent6ro- logues africains et europ6ens.
Acta Endoscopica a d6cid6 de soutenir ces rdunions africaines qui nous familia- risent avec des pathologies qui m e n a c e n t ou d6ciment les populations africaines avec u n risque de diss6mination accru compte tenu de la facilit6 des d6placements.
Les 3 es journ6es de formation continue a u r o n t lieu ~ Yamoussoukro en C6te d'Ivoire en avril 2000 sous la conduite du Professeur Th6r~se N'Dri.
Les activit6s promues par Acta Endoscopica et ses collaborateurs n ' a u r a i e n t pu
~tre mendes avec succ6s sans l'aide des laboratoires pharmaceutiques, d'instru- mentation mddicale et des autres anonceurs ; nous tenons ~ leur exprimer tout par- ticulibrement notre reconnaissance.

O n the dawn o f the third millennium, the editorial committee o f
Acta Endos- copica
has reflected upon the line o f action adopted by the review for over nearly thirty years o f activity, and we propose to our readers a look at the future develop- ments o f its activities. The creation o f a European review m a y seem an utopia. Since the beginning, it has developed in line with the evolution o f the practice o f endo- scopy, with its soaring in Europe and in the world, and, just as the discipline has arrived at its maturity,Acta Endoscopica
has chosen to become a review dedicated to training in endoscopy.It was, at the origin, the privileged mean o f expression o f the S M I E R (the Medi- cal Society o f Imaging, Teaching, and Research), the oldest European society for endoscopy. Multidiciplinary and open to endoscopists with different specialities, this society rapidly adapted to their need for autonomy. The concept o f multidiciplina- rity was modified with the accommodation o f related disciplines : histopathology ; medical imaging, surgical endoscopy and numerous other partners f r o m the funda- mental medical sciences.
This sharing o f knowledge has been expressed across thematic issues guided by the competence and critical mind o f the ~ Guest Editors ~ who, without insistence on our part, have accepted to consecrate a part o f their precious time like a new kind o f journeymen. In the name o f our subscribers and our readers, we thank them f o r their generosity and the seriousness o f their contribution.
The second challenge taken on by
Acta Endoscopica
was to bet on the impor- tance o f the development o f endoscopy in Europe and the need to develop personal contacts between the practitioners o f this continent. The goal was to reconcile excel- lence and diversity. The SMIER, at the initiative o f Doctor Fernand Vicari, created 12 years ago in Strasbourg the ~ A n n u a l intensive course in digestive endoscopy ~ under the aegis o f the Council o f Europe. The vitality o f the course, now conducted by Professor G~rard Gay, confirms the tendencies mentioned above : the sharing o f experiences and original methods in a convivial environment, allowing people to get to know and understand each other better without having to worry about the use o f languages.Finally, at the turn o f the century, the protagonists

propose a new challenge. From French speaking Africa, coming regularly to Europe, are qualified scientists, often the most favoured ones, who have the expectation that our meetings present a way to ameliorate their daily medical and endoscopic practice. In 1997, with the inspiration o f Professor Francis Klotz o f the General Hospital in Dakar, the idea to move European experts towards Africa in order to bring the fruits o f their experience to disfavoured countries was born. Commitment to this project was consecrated during the first few days o f the French-Speaking African Associa- tion f o r Continued Training in Hepato-Gastro-Enterology ( A A F F C H G E ) in Dakar in May 1998 and again this year, in Marrakech under the remarkable direc- tion o f Professor Na~ma Amrani.Here again, like in Strasbourg, the human connections turned out to be energy conductors and the desire f o r conviviality was increased by the discovery o f un- known problems, which contributed to a larger opening o f the mind.
The members o f the Belgian Endoscopy Society (Socidt~ Beige d'Endoscopie), presided by Professor Jean-Claude Debongnie, came back f r o m Dakar with an enthusiastic spirit and decided to organise, f r o m there on and at least until year 2002, yearly workshops between Senegalese and Belgian endoscopists, as a first landmark o f a regular exchange between African and European gastroenterologists.

decided to support these African meetings which familiarise us more with diseases that threaten or decimate African populations, with a higher risk o f dissemination as a result o f easier migrations.The Third Training Workshop will take place in Yamoussoukro in Ivory Coast in April 2000 and will be chaired by Professor Th~r~se N'Dri.
