REGARD SUR SOI

Un second thème qui a été détecté dans les données renvoie à la tendance des membres à parler d’eux-mêmes en tant qu’individu et en tant que communauté. La partie qui suit illustre la façon que les individus et la communauté se décrivent.

Vient d’abord le regard de l’individu sur lui-même. Il arrive à l’occasion que les membres partagent aux autres les raisons pour lesquelles ils sont fascinés par Columbine. Certaines discussions ne concernent que ce sujet. En tout, 29 publications et 22 discussions ont été codées « Intérêt (c) » (pour voir la signification précise de ce code, se référer à l’annexe C). L’extrait qui suit en est un bon exemple de ce code.

[…] I think part of the reason that I get such a strong wave of nostalgia from watching videos and news reports about columbine is that the late 90s is around the time that some of my earliest memories are from. The grainy film from VHS recordings of columbine news coverage, the interesting hair styles, the style of clothing worn and the aesthetically pleasing, now cheesy, simplified designs that were on sneakers and t-shirts. The other huge reason behind the immense nostalgia I get from watching videos about columbine is the fact that my cousins were also high school age when columbine took place. I often visited and played video games with them back in the day. Two of the three of my cousins resembled Eric and Dylan in looks, one had a very similar personality to Dylan as well. This crazy nostalgia and romanticizing from the late 90s and Columbine has definitely driven my interest in the tragedy to the point where I had literal dreams involving the tragedy it self and the time period. […] So what do you guys think? […] What drives your interest in Columbine? Is nostalgia the prevailing feeling you get when you read about Columbine?

Les raisons évoquées par les membres pour expliquer leur intérêt varient d’une personne à l’autre. Pour certains, c’est l’énorme quantité d’informations disponibles sur le sujet qui les a attirés. Pour d’autres, c’est l’engouement médiatique. Une raison souvent avancée par les membres fait référence aux ressemblances perçues entre les tueurs et eux-mêmes au niveau des intérêts (musique, films, jeux vidéo) de l’apparence (habillement, coiffure) ou de leurs sentiments (envers l’école, la société). Cette proximité avec les tueurs dérange et en inquiète plusieurs, même ceux qui ressentent cette proximité. À quelques reprises, des membres remettent en question la moralité et le potentiel de dangerosité de leurs sentiments.

Some can look at them from a more clinical perspective, but others end up seeing aspects of themselves in either Eric or Dylan.With that in mind:Do you think it's morally "right" to empathize with murderers?Do you think it's morally "right" to sympathize with murderers?Do mass murderers deserve more sympathy and/or empathy than serial killers? Are all murderers the same?Do you find yourself relating more to Eric or Dylan (assuming you do)? Why do you think you feel this way? Do you think this gives you a bias in your interpretation of the massacre and its causes?

Nous avons repéré huit discussions centrées autour de la moralité/la dangerosité liée à l’intérêt nourri envers Columbine et les deux tueurs. Les réponses à ces questionnements vont sensiblement tous dans le même sens : 1) il est mal de sympathiser avec leurs actions, mais possible de sympathiser avec leurs troubles et leur détresse; 2) il est naturel de vouloir comprendre tragédie d’une aussi grande ampleur; tant et aussi longtemps que l’intérêt, aussi obsessionnel soit-il, ne bascule pas vers une envie de tuer.

Les membres de la communauté ont conscience que leur intérêt pour ce sujet est mal perçue. Ils ont aussi conscience que quelques tueurs de masse étaient eux-mêmes des admirateurs d’Eric Harris et Dylan Klebold. Il est ainsi peu surprenant que les membres de la communauté cherchent à rationaliser leur comportement. Par contre, il est intéressant de voir où les membres tracent la ligne entre le comportement jugé acceptable de celui qui ne l’est pas.

Les membres avouent passer beaucoup de temps à la recherche et la lecture d’information. Cette recherche peut avoir des effets positifs ou négatifs sur eux.

Commentaire par QueerCalamari, n°. 782: […] I've recognized parts of myself in both Eric and Dylan, but overall I'd say I relate more to Eric. I'm prone to irrational fits of anger; I've privately written about my own revenge fantasies, albeit more as a stress-relieving coping mechanism than anything else; when I was younger, I pushed myself to always be "different" than my peers to the point of near absurdity, almost voluntarily ostracizing myself in the process. I've certainly had an intrusive thought or two about doing something "regrettable" - but I would say that studying Columbine has helped me find healthier ways of dealing with my own personal hangups in a peaceful, rational manner. My worse fear is letting my anger control me.I will admit that I try harder than I should to see Eric and Dylan in a sympathetic light - but that is because I, like many here, continue to see myself in them. Acknowledging their negative attributes has helped me, in turn, reflect on mine.

Ces témoignages sont des cas relativement isolés en ce sens qu’ils ont peu été réitérés par d’autres membres. Il est impossible de générer ces impacts à l’ensemble de la communauté. Il est toutefois intéressant de voir ces deux expériences complètement opposées, toutes deux reliés à l’intérêt et la recherche sur Columbine.

Vient ensuite le regard des membres sur la communauté. Une communauté partage notamment une identité commune. L’identité est décrite clairement par les modérateurs. Comme il a déjà été mentionné, la description du subreddit est affichée dans le sidebar et reste donc visible pour tous. Cette identité est aussi réitérée à plusieurs reprises au fil des discussions. Voici quelques exemples.

Everyone is here for a reason, but the majority of us don't have some gaping wound from this tragedy (most of us weren't personally involved) that needs to heal.Thanks for the question though. Commentaire par professorkr, n°. 839: You don't have to add that disclaimer. This is a research community. Even though we have Columbiners here with less-than-ideal intentions for finding Columbine interesting, the condemnation of these actions is implied.

I don't think a lot of us users could do it! You're definitely appreciated more than u think :) cheers prof Par contre, la communauté a davantage construit et consolidé son identité en décrivant ce à quoi elle s’opposait. Le fandom entourant Columbine est vaste. Comme Raitanen et Oksanen (2018) le montrent, il existe plusieurs types de fans. Les membres de r/Columbine

ont conscience de cela. Dans leurs discussions, les membres dénigraient ou dénonçaient régulièrement le comportement d’autres fans ou d’autres communautés.

Their opinion is everybody's opinion, and if there is a disagreement, then there will be hoards of "supporters" attacking on all sides. Input an admittedly "taboo" but ultimately benign interest in the Columbine High School Massacre, an event that happened just outside the birth of most of these fanatics, and out spurts the Columbiners. La critique envers la communauté logée sur la plateforme Tumblr est plutôt fréquente. Les membres de Reddit font des commentaires virulents envers le comportement de glorification des tueurs, chose qui serait fréquente sur Tumblr. Ils critiquent les sentiments amoureux entretenus par les fangirls de Tumblr à l’égard des tueurs. Cet exercice (ils sont ainsi, nous ne sommes pas comme eux) permet de consolider leur identité.
