Capítol 4. Literacitat crítica i Ciències Socials
4.2. Llegir la ideologia i reescriure el món
4.2.3. Posicionament davant les informacions socials
“The concept of power merely connotes the capacity to act and to do so effectively” (Apple, 1993, p. 202).
Rather than being able to produce and analyze different readings, many students tend towards passive acceptance of the text and the dominant culture. Yet in a world characterized by conflict, oppression and inequality, students must be given access to a more powerful literacy (or literacies), which requires them to resist textual ideologies and to construct socially critical readings of their texts and their culture. Beyond this, critical literacy demands that people will actively contribute to changing and re-making their culture, with the aim of building a better world in which social justice is not merely an empty slogan.
(Kempe, 2001, p. 41)
“To understand the power-knowledge relationships operating in a […] second-grade classroom, analysts need to understand the
relationship between language form and function, the history of the practices that construct present-day practices, and how social roles are required and transformed” (Rogers, 2004, p. 1).
Prendre un posicionament actiu és una forma de resistència a la capacitat que té qualsevol discurs d’influir els nostres pensaments i les nostres accions: “readers have the power to envision alternate ways of viewing the author’s topic, and they exert that power when they read from a critical stance”
(McLaughliny & DeVoogd, 2004, p. 53).
La pràctica social de la lectura i l’escriptura ha de portar a una reflexió i una acció. “Many children are deeply concerned about these difficult issues when they walk into our classrooms” (Leland, Harste & Smith, 2005 p. 266).
L’anàlisi de diversos textos d’assumptes controvertits pot ajudar a obrir els ulls als estudiants. “Critical literacy seeks to unmask and explain contradictions, hypocrisy, and unexamined beliefs, within ourselves and society, and we have ample evidence to show that critical literacy is effective in transforming teachers and students” (McDaniel, 2006, p. 51).
In teaching young people to question existing power relations to examine the ways in which language works to serve the interests of some at the expense of others, critical pedagogies are designed to expose and address social inequalities. With this social justice agenda and its aim to produce students who see themselves as agents of change, critical literacy is meant to be transformative. (Janks, 2013, p. 229)
“Being critically literate involves the ability to read, see, act,
understand, and challenge different perspectives and human practices that promote the unequal power relations around the world” (Yoon, 2016, p. 4).
“Students can benefit from not only exploring and understanding the dynamics of oppression, but also from a commitment to making decisions and changing systems of oppression through social action”
(Pullin & Cooper, 2008, p. 46). “Literate citizens in a diverse democratic society should be reflective, moral, and active citizens in an interconnected global world. They should have the knowledge, skills, and commitment needed to change the world to make it more just and democratic”
(Banks, 2004, p. 291).
“Critical literacy should begin with students’ own experiences and contexts”
(Cooper & White, 2008, p. 171).
Bishop (2014) es pregunta on l’aprenentatge de la literacitat crítica pot ser exercit de manera autèntica, si “critical literacy is limited when attempting to take social action to redress political inequities and injustices within the context of school-based literacy curricula” (2014, p. 58).
“literacy is more than linguistic;; it is political and social practice that limits or creates possibilities” (Van Sluys et al., 2006, p. 199).
