Notes on Grammar (For Home Study) A. Formation of Adverbs
In English some adverbs are forrned from adjectives by adding the suffix -ly to the a~jective: rapid - rapidly; beautifuI - beautifully. In Hungarian the adverbial marker -n, -an, -en, -on or -ul, -ül added to an adjective forms the corresponding adverb.~heending -ul,-=lll is used mostly with adjectives refer-ring to nationality, and with those ending in -atlan, -etlen, -talan, -tele~

For a determination of which of the variants -an, -en or -on is used for a particular adverb, the general rule is that the vowel preceding the =Q is the same as the auxiliary vowel before the -k in the plural of the corresponding adjective: világos - világosak - világosan

The superlative is always forrned by add ing the prefix leg- to the cOmparative, and is generully preceded by the definite article. (As illustrated in the abpve list, however, the comparative of some words is irregular: the same irregularity must appear in the superlative since the superlative is forrned from the compara-tive. )
(2) The positive is used in comparisons of equality. Note in the

(3) A statement containing a comparative followed by 'than' may be render-ed into Hungarian in two ways: One construction is similar to the English, where mint corresponds to the English 'than'; the second construction is restricted in use to a comparison of two substantives in the nominative form, in which case the nOun or pronoun following the comparative ends in -nál, -nél which replaces mint.
