T h e SMIER is now organizing the European intensive tutorial on gas- troenterological endoscopy in Strasbourg for the 15 th time. As usual, Acta Endoscopica will publish an in-depths summary of the course material. This time, two main topics prevail: new techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and nutrition as well as techniques of nutrition administration.
The development of high-resolution and zoom endoscopic devices as well as modern imaging technology have significantly improved diagnostic accuracy in the gastrointestinal tract. Chromoendoscopy for the visualization of defined cell populations and for improving three-dimensional observation of surface lesions is now widely used in clinical routine.
For many indications classical endoscopic procedures like diagnostic ERCP as well as contrast x-ray of the small bowel are being replaced by MRI-technol- ogy. Yet, who will be best qualified to perform such M R I examinations of the gastrointestinal tract in the future? Is this the traditional realm of the radiologist or the gastroenterologist should rather be in charge considering his~her vast expertise concerning diseases of the bilio-pancreatic system.
Numerous new ideas have been presented for the treatment of complex pan- creatic diseases. Endoscopic retroperitoneal necrosectomy for complicated pancreatitis requires both courage and extensive expertise from the endoscopist.
However, this sophisticated technique is worthwhile and yields spectacular results. New ideas also merged for the endoscopic interventional treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease with the treatment option being frequently dis- cussed: endoscopy sewing-machine, injection of polymers into the muscle layer, or other radiofrequency treatment.
Enteral treatment options for catabolic diseases, malabsorption, and recently pancreatitis have claimed specific attention in gastroenterology. The modes of nutritional administration require endoscopic skill and an uncomplicated access. French and German experts will talk about optimal nutritional options and their modes of application.
Welcome to Straflbourg !
