ANNUAL REPORT OF THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR

The Regional Committee,

Having examined the annual report of the Regional Director for the period 1974-1975, 1. COMMENDS the Regional Director and his staff for the precision and conciseness

of the report, which is a real instrument for the continuous evaluation of the regional programme, which had produced positive results that have been approved by the Committee;

2. THANKS the Regional Director for having succeeded by means of innovative

approaches in carrying out the priority activities, despite the economic crisis and the consequent reduction in the resources available for the implementation of the programme;

3. NOTES with satisfaction the stress placed in the regional programme on self-reliance by Member States and on the increased use of African technicians and specialists;

4. REQUESTS the Regional Director to continue to lay stress on:

(i) the coordinating and catalytic action of the Regional Office;

(ii) the development of a strategy designed to facilitate achievement of self-reliance by Member States in the shortest possible time;

(iii) the strengthening of the expanded immunization programme as well as the other programmes in operation;

(iv) the control of communicable diseases such as schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, malaria, trypanosomiasis and tuberculosis, which are a serious hindrance to socioeconomic development;

(v) the promotion of biomedical research and primary health care;

(vi) the introduction of new approaches in concert with the Member States of the Region with a view to removing inefficient bureaucracy where it exists;

(vii) the adaptation in cooperation with the governments concerned of the structures of the WHO representatives Offices to the Special needs of each country and the reorientation of Regional Office activities and

5. REAFFIRMS its full confidence in the Regional Director.
