AFR/RC28/R1:

The Regional Committee,

Having examined the report of the Regional Director on strengthening the role of the Regional Committee;1

Referring to Article 50 of the Constitution;

Subscribing to the social objective of health for all by the year 2000,

1. ENDORSES the recommendations of the Regional Director, together with his remarks made during discussion;

2. INVITES the Member States to take the appropriate measures for strengthening the role of the Regional Committee by:

(i) establishing multisectoral coordination mechanisms at country level, such as national health councils or committees and similar bodies;

(ii) ensuring continuity of action by sending to the Regional Committee and to the World Health Assembly, representatives and delegations, membership of which should not so far as possible be changed too frequently, and preferably led by Ministers or senior officials;

(iii) making the best possible use of decisions and resolutions likely to promote the health of all classes of the populations;

(iv) facilitating participation by nationals in the execution of programmes of the Organization;

3. REQUESTS the Regional Director and the Director-General to take all necessary measures to enable the Regional Committee fully to play its constitutional role, in close coordination with the Executive Board and the World Health Assembly;

4. REQUESTS the Regional Director to report on results achieved in strengthening the role of the Regional Committee in the forthcoming biennial report on the work of WHO.
