Après avoir donné à Zig le nombre entier z > 4 et à Puce le nombre entier p > 4, Diophante invite chacun d’eux à tracer sur le recto d’une feuille de papier puis sur le verso respectivement z points et p points, trois points quelconques n’étant jamais sur la même droite, de manière à obtenir sur le recto le plus grand nombre possible de quadrilatères convexes et sur le verso le plus petit nombre possible de quadrilatères convexes.
Q₁ Zig constate qu’il a tracé au total 45 quadrilatères de plus que Puce. Déterminez z et p en justifiant vos réponses Donnez une illustration des configurations obtenues par les deux comparses.
Q₂ Cher lecteur, avec un point de plus que Zig, déterminez le plus petit nombre possible de quadrilatères convexes que vous pouvez tracer. Donnez une illustration de la configuration ainsi obtenue.
Solution proposée par Bernard Vignes Q₁ et Q₂
Nombre maximum de quadrilatères convexes obtenus avec n > 4 points qui sont les sommets d’un polygone régulier = C(n,4) = n(n-1)(n-2)(n-3)/24
Nombre minimum de quadrilatères convexes obtenus avec n > 4 points : il est identique au nombre minimum de croisements dans un graphe à n sommets : A014540 de l’OEIS (voir annexe)

The values a(19) and a(21) were obtained by Aichholzer et al. in 2006. The value a(18) is claimed by the Rectilinear Crossing Number project after months of distributed computing.
