D i m a n c h e 17 drcembre 2000, tu entreras en fonctions et tu prrsideras le 13 e Cours intensif d'endoscopie de Strasbourg. Pour une fois l'histoire et la grographie se rejoignent ici, h Strasbourg. Strasbourg capitale euro- prenne, sirge du Parlement, Strasbourg, point de passage entre la France et l'Allemagne et lieu de passage du relais entre l'ancien et le nouveau prrsident. Note bien Michael que je n'ai pas dit entre l'ancienne et la nou- velle grndration, car vois-tu Michael, la SMIER reste un lieu de rencontre entre coll~gues de tous figes et de toutes nationalitrs.
Que de chemin parcouru ensemble depuis ce petit matin frileux de drcembre 1987 off pour la premirre lois nous avons gravi les marches du Parlement europren pour le premier cours, sous la houlette de Fernand Vicari, le proph~te. Treize ans plus tard, c'est un autre palais qui nous accueillera pour nos travaux, mais toujours ~ Strasbourg, capitale mythique de ce pays de 16gende et d'amiti6 : la SMIER. Oh ! quelquefois nous avons 6t6 infid~les ~ Strasbourg, mais tr~s vite nous y sommes reve- nus pour ne plus en repartir. Finalement, on est mieux chez sol et j'esp~re que cette annre encore, tous les participants de ce treizi~me cours s'y sen- tiront bien.
Notre cours a grandi. La croissance n'a pas toujours 6t6 facile, surtout les premibres annres, mais notre obstination et l'aide jamais drmentie de nos amis de l'industrie pharmaceutique et de l'endoscopie, nous ont per- mis de franchir tous les 6cueils. Acta Endoscopica aussi a chang& Avec le temps, la revue est devenue Revue Europdenne de Formation Continue en Endoscopie et ses numrros thdmatiques sont de plus en plus apprrcirs.
Ce changement, nous l'avons pens6 avec Paul Mainguet devant un car6 lors d'une journre commune entre la SMIER et la Socirt6 Roumaine de Gastro-entdrologie. Depuis, beaucoup d'eau a coul6 sous les ponts du Danube, la Revue Roumaine de Gastro-entdrologie qui 6tait bilingue (comme Acta Endoscopica) est devenue anglophone, mais chut... La SMIER n'est pas francophone, pas plus que le Cours intensif, puisque cette annre, le franqais, l'anglais et l'allemand en seront les langues offi- cielles. Le multilinguisme cofite cher, tr~s cher m~me, il faut donc forcr- ment se limiter ~ des langues dites vrhiculaires. L'Esprrento serait peut-
~tre la langue la plus adaptde mais malheureusement et malgr6 les efforts de mon propre grand-prre maternel, cette langue commune reste ignorre.
Alors, faut-il renoncer ? Non absolument pas. I1 faut poursuivre le travail en ignorant ceux qui pr~chent qu'un sabir d'anglais est la seule solution.
Alors, ami Michael, ~ l'entrde de ce 3 e milldnaire, certains disent millr- nium, il te faut reprendre le flambeau et le maintenir bien haut. En fran-
~ais, millrnium veut dire <~ une ~euvre qui durera 1 000 ans ~>, souhaitons-le la SMIER et au Cours intensif de Strasbourg.
Sois assur6 que les anciens seront 1~, ~ tes crtrs, pour poursuivre l'ceuvre commune. Je te souhaite, Michael, tous les succbs et la rrussite que notre socidt6 mrrite.

to the new president
O n Sunday December the I T h, you will start to act as president and will chair the 13 th Strasbourg Intensive Course in Endoscopy. For once, history and geography will be united here, in Strasbourg. Strasbourg, the European capital, the seat of the European Parliament; Strasbourg, on the broder between France and Germany will also be the place where the former president will hand the relay over to the new president. Please be aware, Michael, that I did not say the relay between the old and the new generation because, Michael, the SMIER remains a meeting place for col- leagues o f a l l ages and nationalities.
What a long way we have come together, since that cold dawn in December 1987 when, for the first time, we climbed the steps o f the European Parliament, under the leadership of the prophet Fernand Vicari.
Thirteen years later, it is yet another palace that will welcome us for our course, still in Strasbourg, the mythic capital o f this land o f legend and friendship: the SMIER. Oh, sometimes we were not faithful to Strasbourg, but we were quick to return to her, not to part again. In the end, we feel at home here and I hope that, this year again, all the participants o f this 13 th course will feel at ease.
Our course has grown. Its growth has not always been easy, mostly during the first years, but our wilfulness and the unfailing help from our friends of the pharmaceutical industry and world of endoscopy helped us to overcome all obstacles. Acta Endoscopica has changed, too. With time, the journal became The European Review of Training in Endoscopy, its the- matic issues more and more appraised. This change we thought about toge- ther with Paul Mainguet while drinking coffee during a joint meeting bet- ween the S M I E R and the Romanian Society o f Gastroenterology. Since, much water has flown under the bridges o f the Danube. The journal of the Romanian Society of Gastroenterology, once written in two languages (like Acta Endoscopica), is now in English only but, don't tell... The SMIER is not a French-speaking society, nor the intensive course a French-speaking event since, this year, French, English and German will be the official lan- guages. Using multiple languages is expensive, even very expensive. Thus, we have to restrict ourselves to languages that can be used as vehicles. Espe- ranto could have been the most appropriate language but unfortunately, and despite the efforts o f my own grandfather, this universal language remains ignored by most. Should we thus give up ? Absolutely not. We have to keep on working, ignoring those preaching in favor of English as the only solution.
Thus, Michael, at the dawn of this 3 ra millenium, you have to grasp the torch and hold it high. In french, millenium means 'a piece o f work made to last a thousand years'. This is the least I wish to the S M I E R and to the Strasbourg Intensive Course.
You can be sure that the old crew will be there by your side, to pursue our common mission. I wish you, Michael, all the success that our society deserves.
