The work of the WHO in the African Region - Biennial report for 1979-1980 of the Regional Director

The Regional Committee,

Having considered the biennial report for1970-1980 of the Regional Director on the work of WHO in the African Region;1

Having ascertained that the report conforms with the directives given by the Committee at its twenty-fifth session,2 with the regional strategy for health development and the provisions of resolution WHA33.17,

1. COMMENDS the Regional Director for the quality of his report;

2. APPROVES the presentation and the content of the report;

3. NOTES with satisfaction that the work reported is in conformity with the instructions of the governing bodies and with all the programme policies for achieving the goal of Health for all by the year 2000;

4. INVITES the Member States to participate to a greater extent in the activities of the Regional Secretariat and to formulate detailed plans of action for the implementation of national health development strategies,

5. REQUESTS the Regional Director to:

(i) continue to analyse national experiences and to think out programmes in depth with the Member States so as to ensure health development compatible with socioeconomic development;

(ii) continue to support the National Liberation movements recognized by the OAU in order to mitigate the harmful effects of apartheid on health until the political, social and economic liberation of the whole continent is attained;

(iii) continue to search for sources of extra-budgetary funds for health development activities at country level;

(iv) promote and strengthen research and development to identify methods and techniques of use to primary health care and its system of referral.
