4.5 Orientations futures et recommandations
Dans le cadre de la présente thèse, nous avons fait face à plusieurs défis d’ordre méthodologique et culturel qui sont souvent communs à l’ensemble des travaux sur le développement de l’enfant autochtone (Sarche & Whitesell, 2012). Sept besoins prioritaires découlant de ces défis ont d’ailleurs été identifiés par le Native Children’s Research Exchange (NCRE) et ils composent l’agenda des futurs travaux dans ce domaine de recherche. Le besoin de développer des mesures et d’évaluer de façon critique les outils diagnostiques auprès d’enfants autochtones constitue une priorité relevée conjointement par le NCRE et la présente étude. Actuellement, peu d’instruments d’évaluation du développement ont déjà été utilisés auprès d’enfants autochtones et encore moins ont été validés (Sarche & Whitesell, 2012). Comme nous le mentionnons dans la thèse, il n’est pas non plus possible de situer le développement des enfants relativement à un échantillon normatif issu de cette population (Dionne, Mckinnon, & Squires, 2010). Cet avancement limité sur le plan psychométrique a des répercussions négatives dans le domaine de la recherche, mais aussi de l’intervention auprès de l’enfant autochtone : il constitue un frein logistique à la réalisation de travaux de recherche ; il mine la crédibilité des résultats des études; il nuit à l’identification d’enfants au développement atypique et de facteurs qui y sont associés.
Une autre recommandation émise par le NCRE à laquelle nous estimons qu’il est important de donner suite est de favoriser un partenariat scientifique et clinique avec les communautés autochtones. Un partenariat similaire à celui décrit dans le « learning collaborative model » des National Initiatives for Children’s Healthcare Quality, qui mise sur l’implication des membres des communautés dans le développement, l’implantation et la réalisation de programmes de recherche, de prévention ou d’intervention est susceptible de permettre un rattrapage plus rapide sur le plan des connaissances dans le domaine des pratiques parentales et du développement de l’enfant autochtone, un plus grand respect des perspectives différentes, mais complémentaires des Autochtones et non autochtones et une meilleure compréhension de l’influence de la culture sur le développement des enfants autochtones (Bennett & Shangreaux, 2005; BigFoot & Funderburk, 2011; Sarche & Whitesell, 2012).
Malgré quelques similarités, les résultats de la présente thèse ne corroborent pas parfaitement ceux de travaux effectués auprès d’échantillons occidentaux. Ces différences observées suggèrent la nécessité de développer des modèles théoriques et une compréhension du développement de l’enfant considérant davantage le contexte spécifique des Autochtones (Sarche & Whitesell, 2012). D’une part, le contexte de traumatisme historique vécu pendant plus d’un siècle par cette population, car il accroît la fréquence d’exposition aux risques ainsi que la vulnérabilité physiologique et psychologique face au stress généré par ceux-ci (Bombay et al., 2014). D’autre part, le contexte écologique dans lequel l’enfant autochtone évolue dès sa naissance, car il implique davantage les membres de la famille élargie et de la communauté (Ball, 2012; Muir & Bohr, 2014). En ce sens, nous suggérons que les futures études ne se centrent pas uniquement sur la relation dyadique entre la mère et l’enfant, mais qu’elles considèrent aussi le rôle des différents acteurs impliqués directement auprès de l’enfant ou indirectement.
Différentes traditions ou systèmes propres à certaines cultures peuvent permettre à des individus, des familles et des enfants de bien fonctionner malgré l’adversité (Gone, 2009; LaFromboise et al., 2006). La présente thèse montre l’influence positive de la qualité de l’environnement familial sur le développement du nourrisson inuit et suggère la mise en place de programmes de formation et de soutien parental adaptés à la culture telle que le propose la Commission de vérité et de réconciliation (2015). Le soutien social perçu et l’identification positive à sa culture constituent aussi des facteurs associés à un meilleur développement selon deux études américaines réalisées auprès d’Autochtones (Frankel et al., 2014; Sarche et al., 2009). Selon nous, l’identification de tels facteurs soutenant la résilience et le développement de l’enfant nous apparaît comme une avenue prometteuse et utile pour aider les familles et les enfants à briser la transmission intergénérationnelle du risque.
