INTRODUCTION

The 200] African Statistical Yearbook, the 20th issue, presents

data

arranged on a country basis for

S3

ECA members States. generally for the years 1990

to

1999 or for the last nine years for which data are available.

It

is published

in

two volumes, with the following sub-regional arrangements:

Part 3 - Central Africa Part 4 - East Africa Part 5 - Southern Africa

When data presented in this Yearbook: differ from the corresponding data for the same year, given in the earlier edition, it should be taken to reflect corrections or revisions made as a result of the receipt of further information.

As in the previous editions, the section A contains sub- regional summary tables which generally cover the years 1980. 1985. 1990 and the period 1993-1999, or the last five years period.

In

order

to

facilitate inter-country comparisons, the same unit is used for identical tables.

However, individual countries' coverage, concepts and definitions of data may vary. Readers are, therefore, advised to refer

to

the individual country footnotes for detailed explanations.

births and the number of deaths respectively per 1000 mid- year populations.

Life expenctancy at birth is the number of years a newborn infant would live if prevailing patterns

of

mortality of the

total

population at the time of his/her birth were to stay the same throughout his life.

The total fertility rate is the average number of children that would be born per woman if she experiences no mortality and were subject to a given set of age-specific fertility throughout her lifetime.

The gross reproduction rate is the average number of live daughters born

to

a hypothetical female birth cohort which would be subject

to

a set of age-specific fertility on the assumption that mortality before the end of the reproductive age is zero. The gross reproduction rate is thus equal

to

total fertility multipied by the proportion of births of daughters.

9 are based on national publications, the

UN

Yearbook. of National Accounts, and the

ECA

Statistics Division estimates.

Where necessary, official figures have been adjusted

to

conform with the System of National Accounts (SNA).

OrgAnization (FAO) and on listings (commodity basis) prepared by the same organization for its production Yearbook. The data of Tables

taken

respectively from the FAO Yearbook of Fishery Statistics and

the

FAO Yearbook of Forest Products Statistics.

This table shows FAO index numbers of agricultural production. These index numbers are computed by Laspeyres fonnula using the price weighted sum of the production of various commodities less seed and fodder.

The figures on length of railways reported in this table refer

to

the total length of all gauge railway lines open for public traffic counting only once the double or triple lines.

Railway traffic relates to the domestic and international traffic on all railway lines within each country irrespective of gauge, except railways entirely within urban unit and plantation, industrial mining, funicular and cable railways.

Figures on passenger- kilometre and net ton-kilometre exclude respectively military, government and railway personnel when carried without revenue, and service traffic, mail, baggage and non-revenue governmental stores.

PRICES

This table contains index numbers of consumer and wholesale prices. The data for these indexes are based on information available in national publications, the ILO Yearbook of Labour Statistics, and the UN Monthly Bulletin ... of Statistics. Both African and non-African household consumer price index numbers are published, whenever available, with the following breakdown: food, clothing, fuel and light, and rent. The wholesale price index numbers measure changes in commodity prices at the wholesale stage of distribution. The number of
