INTRODUCTION
The 2000 African StatisticaJ YcarOOok. the eighteenth issue, presents data arranged on a country basis for 53 ECA members States, generally for the years 1990 to 1998 or for the last nine years for which data are available. It is published in two volumes, with the following sub-regional arrangements:

When data presented in this Y _book differ from the corresponding data for the same year, given in the earlier edition, it should be taken to reflect corrections or revisions made as a result of the receipt of further jnfotmlltion.
As in the previous editions, the section A contains sub- regional summary tables which generany cover the years 1975,1980, 1985, 1990 and the period 1990-1998, or 'he last five years period. In order to facilitate inter..country comparisons, the same unit is used for identical tables.
However. individual countries' coverage; concepts and defmitions of data may vary. Readers are, therefore, advised to refer to the Individual country footnotes for detailed explanations.

Data presented under this chapter, are mainly derived from the two publications "World Population Prospects, estimates and projections as assessed in 1996" of UN Secretariat Population Division. and nUN J996 Demographic Yearbook". or ECA estimates. Data are also supplemented by national sources when these are comparable with the UN series,

The average annual growth rates of the population have been computed using an exponential rate of increase.
Crude binh and death rates represent the number of live births and the number of deaths respectively per 100(} mid·

The statistIcs presented in tables 6 to 9 are based on national publications, the UN Yearbook of Natfonal A"""""ts, and the ECA Statistics Division estimales. Where necessary, official figures have been adjusted to conform with tbe System of National Accounts (SNA).
