INTRODUCTION

The 1992/93 African Statistics I Yearbook. the fourteenth issue, presents data arranged on a country basis for 53 ECA members Slates, for the years 1984 to J993. It is published in two volumes, each in two parts.

with the following sub-regional arrangements:

This publication which constitutes the fourth part of Volume II of this edition coven the ten countries in Central Africa.

When data preecnrcdinthis Yearbook differ from the corresponding data for the same year. given inthe earlier edition. it should be taken to reflect. corrections or revisions made as a result of the receipt of further information.

As in the previous editions, the section A contains sub-regional summary tables which generally cover the years 1970, 1975. 1980 and the period 1985-1993. In order to facilitale inter-country comparisons, the same unit is used for identical tables. However, individual countries" coverage. concepts and definitions of data may vary. Readers arc, therefore. advised to refer to the individual country footnotes for detailed explanations.

Data presented under this chapter, are mainly derived from the two publications "World Population Prospects, estimates and projections as assessed in 199r of UN Secretariat Population Division, and "UN 1990 Demographic Yearbook", or ECA estimates. nata are also supplemented by national sources when these are comparablewiththe UN series.

The source of the data in these tables is ~Labour Force Estimates and Projections, 19S()'-2025~preparedby the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The economically active population comprises all employed and unemployed persons (including lhose seeking work for the first time). It coven employers, persons working on their own account, salaried employees, wage earners, unpaid family workers, members of producers' co-operatives and members of the armed forces. Data are estimates of ILO and ECA.

The crude activity rate is defined as the ratio of the economically active population to the total population.

The average annual growth rates of the population have been computed using an exponential rate of increase.

Crude birth and death rates represent the number of live births and the number of deaths respectively per 1000 mid-yearpopulations.

Life cxpenctancy at birth is the number of yean a newborn infant would live if prevailing patterns of mortality of the total population at the time of his/her birth were tostay the same throughout his life.

The total fertility rate is the average number of children that would be born per woman if she experiences no mortality and were subject to a given set of age-specific fertility throughout her lifetime.

The gross reproduction rate is the average number of live daughtersbornto a hypothetical female birth cohort which would be subject to a set of age-specific fertility on the assumption that mortality before the end of the reproductive age iszero. The gross reproduction rate is thus equal to total fertility multipied by the pruportion of birthsofdaughters.

NATIONAL ACCOUNTS

The statistics presented in tablel 6 to 9 are based on national publications, the UN Yearbook of National Accounts, and the ECA Statistics Division estimates.

Where necessary, official figures have been adjusted to conformwith the System of National Accounts (SNA).

The two tables refer to expenditure on gross domestic product at current prices and constant prices.
