SOURCES & NOTES
The statiJtiCI presented in this edition of the Yearbook.
are, at far u possible in accordance with international recommendations and definition.. Where important deviations are known to exist, they are indicated in footnotes at the end of each country. Owing to the rounding of figures. the totalJ shown in tablca do not a.lways correspond exactly to the sum of their component items.
POPULATION
Data presented under this chapter. are mainly derived from the two publications "World Population Prospects, estimates and projections as
Ulelledin 1992" of UN Secretariat Population Division. and "UN 1992 Demographic Yearbook". or ECA estimates. Data are also supplemented by national sources when these are comparable with the UN series.
IAhk.l:
Unless otherwise stated, the figures shown relate to de facto population.
The age groups used in this table are 5 years groups through 60--64 years and 65 years and over.
Tables 3 and 4:
TIle source of the data in these tables is "Labour Force Estimate. and Projections, 19SG-202S" prepared by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The economically active population comprises all employed and unemployed persons (including those seeking work for the first time). It covers employers, persons working on their own account, salaried employees, wage earners, Wlpftid family workers, members of producers' co- operatives and members of the anned forces. Data are estimate. of lLO snd ECA.
The crude activity rate is defined as the ratio of the economically active population to the total population.
I.a.llk.j:
The Demographic Indicators presented in thia table have been calculated by the Population Diviaion of the UN Secretariat.
TIle average annual growth rates of the population have been computed using an exponential rate of increase.
d' accroissement exponentiel.
Crude birth and death rates represent the number of live births and the number of deaths respectively per 1000 mid- year populations.
Life expenctancy at birth is the number of years a newborn infant woukilive if prevailing paUerns of mortality of the total population at the time of his/her birth were to stay
tilesame throughout
hislife.
1be totalfertility rate is the average number of children that would. be bom per woman if she experiences no mortality and were subject to a given set of age-specific fertility throughout her lifetime.
The gross reproduction rate is the average number of live daughters born to a hypothetical female birth cohort which would be subject to a set of age-specific fertility on the assumption that mortality before the end of the reproductive age is zero. The gross reproduction rate is thus equal to total fertility muItipied by the proportion of births of daughters.
NATIONAL ACCOUNTS
The statistics presented in tables 6 to 9 are based on national publications, the UN Yearbook of National Accounts, and the ECA Statistics Division estimates.
Where necessary, official figures have been adjusted to conform with the System of National Accounts (SNA).
Tables 6 and 7
The two tables refer to expenditure on gross domestic product at current prices and constant prices.
Tables 8 and 9
Tables 8 and 9 show the distribution of the gross domestic product at factor cost (excluding indirect taxes less subsidies) at current and constant prices by ISIC kind of economic activity.
AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND FISHING The data for Tables 10 to 13 are mainly based on information received from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and on listings (commodity basis) prepared
bythe same organization for its production Yearbook. The data of Tables 14 and 15 are taken respectively from the FAO Yearbook of Fishery Statistics and the FAD Yearbook of Forest Products Statistics.
Table 10
This table .how. FAO index numben of agricultural production. These index numbers are computed by Laspeyres fonnula using the price weighted sum of the production of verious commodities leu seed and fodder.
•
