SOURCES & NOTES
The statistics presented in this edition of the Yearbook are, ai far as possible in accordance with international
recommendations and definitions. Where importantdeviations are known to exist, they are indicated in footnotes at the end of each country. Owing to the
rounding of figures, the totals shown in tablet do notalways correspond exactly to the sum of their component
items.POPULATION
Data presented under this chapter, are mainly derived from the two publications "World Population Prospects,
estimates and projection! as assessed in 1994" of UN Secretariat Population Division, and "UN 1994 Demographic Yeubook", or ECA estimates. Data are also supplemented by national sources when these are comparable with the UN series.Table 1:
Unless otherwise stated, the figures shown relate to de facto population.
Table 1:
The age groups used in this table are 5 years groups through 60-64 years and 65 years and over.
Tables 3 and 4:
The source of the data in these tables is "Labour Force Estimates and Projections, 1950-2025" prepared by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The economically active population comprises all employed and unemployed persons (including those seeking work for the first time). It covers employers, persons working on their own account, salaried employees, wage eamen, unpaid family workers, members of producers' co operatives and members of the armed forces. Data are estimates of ILO and ECA.
The crude activity rate is defined as the ratio of the economically active population to the total population.
Table 5:
The Demographic Indicators presented in this table have been calculated by the Population Division of the UN Secretariat.
The average annual growth rates of the population have
been computed using an exponential rate of increase.
Cnide birth and death rates represent the number of live births and the number of deaths respectively per 1000 mid
year populations.
Life expenctancy at birth is the number of years a newborn in&nt would live if prevailing patterns of mortality of the total population at the time of his/her birth were to stay the same throughout his life.
The total fertility rate is the average number of children that would be bom per woman if she experiences no mortality and were subject to a given set of age-specific
fertility throughout her lifetime. The gross reproduction rate is the average number of live daughters bom to a hypothetical female birth cohort which would be subject to a set of age-specific fertility on the assumption that mortality before the end of the reproductive age is zero. The gross reproduction rate is thus equal to total fertility multipied by the proportion of
births of daughters.NATIONAL ACCOUNTS
The statistics presented in table* 6 to 9 are based on
national publications, the UN Yearbook of National
Accounts, and the ECA Statistics Division estimates.Where necessary, official figures have been adjusted to
conform with the System of National Accounts (SNA).fi and 7
The two tables refer to expenditure on gross domestic product at current prices and constant prices.
T|hlei 8 and 9
Table* 8 and 9 show the distribution of the gross domestic product at factor cost (excluding indirect taxes
leu subsidies) at current and constant prices by ISIC kind
of economic activity.AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND FISHING
The data for Tables 10 to 13 are mainly based on
information received from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and on listings (commodity basis) prepared by the same organization for its production Yearbook. The date of Tables 14 and 15 are takenrespectively from the FAO Yearbook of Fishery Statistics
and the FAO Yearbook of Forest Products Statistics.Table 10
This table shows FAO index numbers of agricultural
production. These index numbers are computed by Laspeyrcs formula using the price weighted sum of the
production of various commodities less seed and fodder.
Tables 11 and 1 ?
Unless otherwise stated, the figures presented in these tables are generally in calendar year basis.
Tahiei?
The meat production data for all varieties of meat relate to production from animals slaughtered in the countries irrespective of their origin. The data always refer to total production, i.e. include both commercial or "inspected production" at farm and "not inspected production". Data are given in terms of dressed carcass weight, excluding
offal and slaughter fats.Unless otherwise stated, this table shows data for the weight of fish ad fish products brought ashore. This weight represents (he net weight of the gutted, eviscerated, filleted, frozen, cured and canned fish products at the time of
landing.
Table IS
Figures are given in solid volume of roundwood without bark. Removals refer to the quantities removed from forest or from trees outside forest excluding lost and unutilized waste in logging and roundwood transportation.
Tableau IS
INDUSTRY INDUSTRIE
Table 16 Tableau 16
Data in this table are taken from national publications as well as the UN Statistical Yearbook and Monthly Bulletin of Statistics. The index numbers shown are based on national series and relate only to the categories "Mining",
"Manufacturing" and "Electricity and gas" as defined by the ISIC Classification. Unless otherwise indicated,
construction is not included in Manufacturing or in the General Industrial Production Index.Table 17
The information was made available to the Secretariat through the replies ofthe governments to the UN Statistical Division questionnaire on industrial statistics. The
coverage and scope of surveys vary from country to country. In most cases, the data are published in the formin which they are available, subject to a general standard
pattern. Unless otherwise stated, gross output and valueadded are reported at current factor cost.
Table 18
The data shown for installed capacity refer to the nominal and annual capacity of all generators available for sknultaiieous operation in hydroelectric and termo-electric plants. The figures reported for production represent the total gross generation of electricity cither by public utilities or by industrial establishments generating for own use.
Tableau 1 g
