Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region
This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.
Northern Hemisphere
China (no update)
As of 30 September 2015, a total of 1 607 825 cases of HFMD had been reported including 107 deaths in China for 2015. From 1 to 30 September 2015, 180 074 cases was reported, similar to what was reported in August (n= 180,813). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2015 is following the seasonal pattern displayed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (Figure 1).

Japan
As of 11 November 2015, there were 376 326 cases of HFMD reported in Japan for 2015. Since March, weekly case numbers of HFMD have increased peaking in August 2015. Since then, weekly case numbers continued to decrease (Figure 2). For the period 2 to 8 November 2015, there were 1 652 cases reported.
This is lower than the previous week (n=2,020). The most frequently identified viruses were Coxsackie virus A16 and A6.

2 Countries/regions in the tropical zone
Hong Kong SAR (China)
As of 7 November 2015, a total of 736 hospital admissions of HFMD have been reported in 2015, higher than the same reporting period in 2014 (n=327). From 1 to 7 November 2015, there were 16 cases of hospital admissions from sentinel sites (Figure 3).

Macau SAR (China)
As of 7 November 2015, 2 795 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau SAR for 2015. 53 new cases were reported in the week ending 7 October. The number of cases follows the seasonal trend (Figure 4).

Singapore
As of 7 November 2015, a total of 24 025 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore for 2015, higher than the number of cases reported in 2014 (n=18 819), for the same reporting period. From 1 to
7 November 2015, there were 502 cases of HFMD reported, which was higher than number of reported cases in the previous week (n=438). The number of cases follows the seasonal trend (Figure 5).

Viet Nam (no update)
As of 18 October 2015, there were 41 603 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam including 5 deaths.
Compared with the same period in 2014 (n=63 515), the cumulative number of reported cases is 34.5% lower.
During week 42 (from 12 to 18 October 2015), there were 2 150 cases with no deaths reported from 62 provinces and cities. Approximately 81.6% of the cases are from the South. There is a decrease of 64 cases (3.1%) compared with the previous week. In the past month, a substantial increase in cases has been reported.
