Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region
This surveillance summary includes information from countries where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts which are routinely reported.
Northern Hemisphere
China (No Update)
As of 30 June, there were 984,699 cases of HFMD had been reported with including 28 deaths in China for 2015, 71 % decreased compared with the same period in 2014 (n=1,688,640). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2015 is following the seasonal pattern displayed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (Figure 1).

Japan
As of 2 August, there were 216,971 cases of HFMD reported in Japan for 2015. Since 12 March (week 11), weekly case numbers of HFMD have surpassed the numbers seen in previous years (Figure 2). For the period 27 July to 2 August 2015, there were 32,289 cases reported, a 9.4% increase compared with the previous week (n=29,504). The cumulative number of cases was as high as that of 2011 in the same reporting period (n=208,317). Most frequently identified viruses were Coxsackie virus A16 and A6.

Countries/regions in the tropical zone
Hong Kong SAR (China)
The weekly number of hospital admissions from sentinel sites remained high compared to that of 2011, 2012 and 2014. As of 1 August, there were 351 cases reported in 2015, which is higher compared to 231 cases reported for the same period in 2014 (Figure 3).

Macau SAR (China)
As of 1 August, 2,212 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau for 2015. The disease trend is in decline. For the week ending 1 August 2015, there were 53 cases reported, which is lower than the previous week (n=74) and lower than the same period in 2014 (Figure 4).

Singapore
As of 1 August, there were 17,512 cases of HFMD reported in Singapore for 2015. From 26 July to 1 August 2015, there were 438 cases of HFMD reported, which is lower than number of reported case in the previous week (n=452) (Figure 5).

Viet Nam
For the period 1 January to 2 August 2015, there were 24,973 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam including 4 deaths. Compared with the same period in 2014, the number of reported cases has decreased by 42.7% and number of deaths increased by 1 case. During week 31st (from 27 July to 2 August 2015), there were 532 cases with no deaths reported from 43 of the 63 provinces. Approximately 75% of the cases are from the South. There is a decrease of 35 cases (6.2%) compared with the previous week.
