Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region
This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.
Northern Hemisphere
China
As of 30 April 2016, a total of 410,850 cases of HFMD including 34 deaths were reported in China for 2016. From 1 to 30 April, 226,430 cases were reported, higher than the number reported in March (n=72,464). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2016 is following the seasonal pattern observed in 2012 to 2015 (Figure 1).

Japan
As of 11 May 2016, there have been 1,989 HFMD cases reported in 2016. The number of HFMD cases in week 18 2016 was 184, compared with 176 cases reported in the previous week. Overall, HFMD activity is low and following seasonal trends.

2 Countries/regions in the tropical zone
Hong Kong SAR (China)
As of 7 May 2016, a total of 146 hospital admissions of HFMD have been reported in the past 19 weeks from sentinel sites, this is similar to the previous years. In epi week 19, 12 cases requiring hospitalisation were reported from sentinel sites. Following a peak in late 2015, HFMD hospital admissions have declined and are in line with the seasonal trend.

Macau SAR (China)
In 2016, 947 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau SAR. In epi-week 19, 188 new cases of HFMD were reported, compared to 122 cases reported in week 18.

Singapore
As of week 18 2016, a total of 14,283 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore. The number of cases in 2016 is higher than that observed during the same period in recent years, except for 2012 when a particularly high number of cases were reported. In week 17 there were 1,022 cases of HFMD reported and in week 18, there were 1,079 cases reported.

Viet Nam
As of 24 April 2016, there were 11,157 cases of HFMD and no deaths reported from 61 of 63 provinces in Viet Nam. In week 17 there were 709 cases and no deaths reported. The number of cases in the Southern region accounted for 61.5 % of all cases reported in the country.
