Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region
This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.
Northern Hemisphere
China (no update)
As of 31 August 2016, a total of 1,792,251 cases of HFMD including 172 deaths were reported in China in 2016. From 1 to 31 August, 171,581 cases were reported, lower than the number reported in July (n=315,077). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2016 follows the seasonal pattern observed in 2012 to 2015 (Figure 1).

Japan
As of 16 November 2016, there have been 57,453 HFMD cases reported in 2016. The number of HFMD cases in week 45 of 2016 was 2,319 compared with 2,887 cases reported in the previous week. HFMD activity started to decrease in week 45 (Figure 2).

Republic of Korea
There has been a decline in the weekly number of reported HFMD cases from sentinel sites. In week 47 of 2016, the number of HFMD cases per 1,000 consultations was 3.3, which was slightly higher than the rate of 2.9 recorded in the previous week (Figure 3).

Countries/regions in the tropical zone
Hong Kong SAR (China)
As of 19 November 2016, a total of 689 hospital admissions for HFMD have been reported from sentinel sites in 2016. In week 46, the number of cases requiring hospitalisation was 21, which was similar to number of cases observed in 2015 (Figure 4).

Macau SAR (China)
In 2016, there have been 3,256 cases of HFMD reported in Macau SAR. In week 47, there were 47 cases of HFMD reported, remaining constant for the past weeks and higher than the reported number of cases (75 cases) in the same week of 2015 (Figure 5).

Singapore
As of week 46 2016, a total of 38,733 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore in 2016. In week 46, there were 581 cases reported, which was slightly lower than that observed during the same period in 2015 (Figure 6).

Viet Nam
As of 20 November 2016, there were 43,858 cases of HFMD and one death reported from 63 provinces in Viet Nam. In week 47, 1,203 cases were reported with no deaths. The number of cases has been decreasing since week 43, following a similar trend to the previous year (Figure 7).
