Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region

This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.

Northern Hemisphere

China (No update)

In 2015, a total of 2,014,999 cases of HFMD including 124 deaths were reported in China. Monthly case counts in 2015 closely align with the expected seasonal trend observed in previous years (Figure 1).

Japan

As of 16 March, there have been 1081 HFMD cases reported in 2016. The number of HFMD cases in week 9 2016 was 93, compared with 53 cases reported in the week prior. Overall, HFMD activity is low and following seasonal trends.

2 Countries/regions in the tropical zone

Hong Kong SAR (China)

As of 12 March 2016, a total of 94 hospital admissions of HFMD have been reported in the past 11 weeks from sentinel sites, this is higher than observed in previous years. From 6 to 12 March 2016, four cases requiring hospitalisation were reported from sentinel sites. To date in 2016 there has been a downward trend in the number of HFMD hospital admissions since a peak in early January.

Macau SAR (China)

As of epi-week 11, 392 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau SAR for 2016. Twenty-seven new cases of HFMD were reported in week 10 and 39 cases were reported in week 11.

Singapore

As of epi-week 10, a total of 6,621 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore in 2016. The number of cases in 2016 is higher than that observed during the same period in recent years. In week 9 there were 832 cases of HFMD reported. In week 10, there were 981 cases were reported.

Viet Nam

As of 13 March, there were 6,257 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam and no deaths reported from 57 of 63 provinces in 2016. In week 11 there were 491 cases and no deaths reported. The number of cases in the Southern region accounted for 73 % of all cases reported in the country.
