Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region
This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.
Northern Hemisphere
China (No Update)
As of 30 April 2016, a total of 410,850 cases of HFMD including 34 deaths were reported in China in 2016.
From 1 to 30 April, 226,430 cases were reported, higher than the number reported in March (n=72,464).
The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2016 is following the seasonal pattern observed in 2012 to 2015 (Figure 1).

Japan
As of 31 May 2016, there have been 2,697 HFMD cases reported in 2016. The number of HFMD cases in week 20 2016 was 428, compared with 279 cases reported in the previous week. Overall, HFMD activity is following seasonal trends (Figure 2).

Countries/regions in the tropical zone
Hong Kong SAR (China)
As of 21 May 2016, a total of 194 hospital admissions of HFMD have been reported in the past 21 weeks from sentinel sites, this is similar to the previous years. In epi week 21, 18 cases requiring hospitalisation were reported from sentinel sites. HFMD hospital admissions have increased but are in line with the seasonal trend (Figure 3).

Macau SAR (China)
In 2016, 1401 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau SAR. In week 21, there were 172 cases of HFMD reported. The number of cases decreased compared to that in week 20 (Figure 4).

Singapore
As of week 20 2016, a total of 16,893 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore. The number of cases in 2016 was higher than that observed during the same period in recent years, except for 2012 when a particularly high number of cases were reported. In week 20, there were 1,314 cases reported (Figure 5).

Viet Nam
As of 8 May 2016, there were 12,605 cases of HFMD and no deaths reported from 61 of 63 provinces in Viet Nam. In week 19, there were 612 cases and no deaths reported. The number of cases in the Southern region accounted for 61.1 % of all cases reported in the country (Figure 6).
