Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region
This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.
Northern Hemisphere
China (no updates)
As of 31 May 2016, a total of 852,925 cases of HFMD including 77 deaths were reported in China in 2016.
From 1 to 31 May, 442,075 cases were reported, higher than the number reported in April (n=226,430).
The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2016 is following the seasonal pattern observed in 2012 to 2015 (Figure 1).

Japan
As of 3 July 2016, there have been 8,566 HFMD cases reported in 2016. The number of HFMD cases in week 26 2016 was 1,503 compared with 1,288 cases reported in the previous week. Overall, HFMD activity is low, and following seasonal trends (Figure 2).

2 Countries/regions in the tropical zone
Hong Kong SAR (China)
As of 12 July 2016, a total of 348 hospital admissions of HFMD have been reported in 2016 from sentinel sites. In epi week 27, the number of cases requiring hospitalisation reported from sentinel sites was 21, which was similar to number of cases observed in previous years other than 2013. HFMD hospital admissions have increased but are in line with the seasonal trend (Figure 3).

Macau SAR (China)
In 2016 there has been 2,360 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau SAR. In week 27, there were 68 cases of HFMD reported, which decreased from 103 cases in weeks 26. (Figure 4).

Singapore
As of week 26 2016, a total of 23,686 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore. And in week 26, there were 972 cases reported, which was higher than that observed during the same period in recent years (Figure 5).

Viet Nam
As of 26 June 2016, there were 17,503 cases of HFMD and no deaths reported from 62 of 63 provinces in Viet Nam. In week 26, there were 503 cases and no deaths reported. The number of cases in the Southern region accounted for 63.8 % of all cases reported in the country (Figure 6).
