Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region
This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.
Northern Hemisphere
China (No update)
As of 31 December 2015, a total of 2,014,999 cases of HFMD were reported including 124 deaths in China for 2015. From 1 to 31 December, 116,239 cases were reported, less than what was reported in the previous month (n= 130,829). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2015 is following the seasonal pattern displayed in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Japan
As of 3 February 2016, there have been 584 HFMD cases reported in 2016. The number of HFMD cases in week 4, 2016 were 168 which is higher than the previous week, week 3 (n=123). Overall, HFMD activity is low and following seasonal trend.

2 Countries/regions in the tropical zone
Hong Kong SAR (China)
As of 30 January 2016, a total of 58 hospital admissions of HFMD have been reported in the past 5 weeks from sentinel sites, this is higher than observed in previous years. From 24 to 30 January 2016, there were 6 cases of hospital admissions from sentinel sites, higher than the number of cases seen in the same reporting period for each of the last four years (2012-2015). In general, the number of HFMD hospital admissions has shown a downward trend since week 2, 2016.

Macau SAR (China) (no update)
As of epi week 2, 2016, 77 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau SAR for 2016. For week 2, 46 cases were reported, higher than the number of cases reported in week 2 (n=31).

Singapore
A total of 2098 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore for 2016 (data up to epi week 4in 2016), followed the general trend for the same reporting period in 2015. In epi week 4 there were 587 cases of HFMD reported, which was lower than number of reported cases in the previous week (n=588).

Viet Nam (no update)
As of 10 January 2016, there were 1,208 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam with no deaths in 62 of the 63 provinces for 2016. Compared to the last two weeks (weeks 51 and 52 of 2015; n=1,963 cases and 0 deaths), the number of cases decreased by 39.5 % (n=755). The number of cases in weeks 1 and 2 in the Southern region accounted for 82.2 % of the cases reported in the whole country.
