Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region

This surveillance summary includes information from countries where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.

Northern Hemisphere

China (No Update)

As of 30 June, there were reported 984,699 cases of HFMD had been reported with including 28 deaths in China for 2015, 71 % decreased compared with the same period in 2014 (n=1,688,640).

The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2015 is following the seasonal pattern displayed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (Figure 1).

Japan

As of 19 July, there were 156,219 cases of HFMD reported in Japan for 2015. Since 12 March (week 11), weekly case numbers of HFMD surpass the numbers seen in previous years (Figure 2). For the period 13 to 19 July 2015, there were 31,920 cases reported had been reported, 37% increase compared with the previous week (n=23,329). Current trend surpasses that of 2013.

Countries/regions in the tropical zone

Hong Kong SAR (China)

The weekly number of hospital admissions from sentinel sites is increasing. As of 4 July, there were 308 cases reported in 2015, which is higher compared to 219 cases reported for the same period in 2014 (Figure 3).

Macau SAR (China)

As of 25 July, 2,109 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macau for 2015. For the week ending 25 July 2015, there were reported 28 cases, which is lower than the previous week (n=78) and lower than or equals to the same period in recent 4 years (Figure 4).

Singapore

As of 18 July, there were 16,633 cases of HFMD reported in Singapore for 2015. From 12 to 18 July 2015, there were 392 cases of HFMD reported, which is lower than number of reported case in the previous week (n=430) (Figure 5).

Viet Nam

For the period 1 Jan to 19 July 2015, there were 23,782 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam including 4 deaths. Compared with the same period in 2014, the number of reported cases has decreased by 40.6%

and number of deaths increased by 2 cases. During week 29th (from 12 to 19 July 2015), there were 535 cases with no deaths reported from 49 of the 63 provinces. Approximately 76.4% of the cases are from the South. There is a decrease of 40 cases (7%) compared with the previous week.
