Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Situation Update Number 461

05 May 2015

Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region

This surveillance summary includes information from countries where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.

Northern Hemisphere

China (no update)

As of 31 March, there were 152,144 cases of HFMD, including 14 deaths, reported by China for 2015.

From 1 to 31 March 2015, 61,378 cases of HFMD had been reported, a 26% decrease compared with the same period in 2014 (n=83,264). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2015 is following the seasonal pattern displayed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (Figure 1).

Japan

As of 22 April, there were 19,447cases of HFMD reported in Japan for 2015. Since 12 March (week 11), weekly case numbers of HFMD have increased in Japan and are higher compared with the numbers seen in previous years (Figure 2). For the period 16 to 22 April 2015, there were 2,439 cases reported, compared with 383 over the same reporting period in 2014.

Hong Kong (China)

The weekly number of hospital admissions from sentinel sites remains low, following the seasonal pattern of HFMD in Hong Kong (Figure 3). As of 25 April, there were 44 cases reported in 2015, compared with 49 cases reported for the same period in 2014.

Macao (China) (No update)

As of 2 April, 333 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macao for 2015. From 23 March to 2 April 2015, 27 cases were reported, and 85% decrease compared with the same period in 2014 (n=177) (Figure 4).

Singapore

As of 25 April, there were 8,835 HFMD cases reported in Singapore for 2015. From 19to 25 April 2015, there were 692 cases of HFMD reported, higher than the number of cases reported in the previous week (n=632) and the same period of 2014 (n=348) (Figure 5).

Viet Nam

For the period 1 Jan to 19 April 2015, there were 13,720 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam including two deaths. Compared with the same period in 2014 (17,410 cases and 2 deaths), the number of

reported cases has decreased by 21.2%. During week 16 (from 13 to 19 April 2015), there were 916 cases and no deaths reported in 62 of the 63 provinces. This is a decrease of 55 cases (5.7%) compared with the previous week (Figure 6).
