Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region

This surveillance summary includes information from countries where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.

Northern Hemisphere

China

There were 90,766 cases of HFMD, including 10 deaths, reported by China in 2015. This is similar to the number of cases reported in January and February in 2012–2014 (Figure 1).

Japan

As of 28 February, there were 7,163 cases of HFMD reported in Japan for 2015. Compared with the previous three years, the weekly HFMD case numbers in 2015 are higher (Figure 2). For the period 15 to 28 February 2015, there were 1,946 cases reported compared with 525 for the same period in 2014.

Countries/regions in the tropical zone

Hong Kong (China)

The weekly number of hospital admissions from sentinel sites reported by hospital authority remains low and follows the known seasonal pattern (Figure 3). As of 28 February 2015, there were 17 cases reported in 2015 compared with 10 cases reported for the same period in 2014.

Macao (China)

As of 9 March 2015, a total of 243 cases of HFMD have been reported in 2015. During the last week of February and the first week of March 2015, 11 cases were reported. This is 62% decrease compared to the same period in 2014 (n=29) (Figure 4).

Singapore

As of 28 February 2015, there were 4,142 HFMD cases reported in 2015. Weekly case numbers decreased in week ending February 21 when compared to the previous week, but increased week by 156 cases. Over the period 15–28 February 2015, 990 cases were reported, 41% higher than the

numbers reported in the same reporting period of 2014 (n=700), but 45% lower than the same period in 2012 (n=1,808) (Figure 5).

Viet Nam

For the period 1 January 2015 to 1 March 2015, there were 6,489 cases of HFMD reported including two deaths:

one in Dong Thap and one in Hau Giang. Compared to the same period in 2014, the number of cases reported has fallen by 18.7%. For the period 23 February to 1 March 2015, 595 cases and no deaths were reported in 46 of the 63 provinces, an increase of 300 cases compared to the previous week.
