Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region

This surveillance summary includes information from countries where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.

Northern Hemisphere

China

As of 30 April, there were reported 325,528 cases of HFMD, including 15 deaths in China for 2015. From 1 to 30 April 2015, 173,384 cases of HFMD had been reported, a 59% decrease compared with the same period in 2014 (n=426347). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2015 is following the seasonal pattern displayed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (Figure 1).

Japan

As of 27 May, there were 37,245 cases of HFMD reported in Japan for 2015. Since 12 March (week 11), weekly case numbers of HFMD have increased in Japan and are higher compared with the numbers seen in previous years (Figure 2). For the period 21 to 27 May 2015, there were 5,255 cases reported, compared with 796 over the same reporting period in 2014.

2 Countries/regions in the tropical zone

Hong Kong (China)

The weekly number of hospital admissions from sentinel sites is increasing, following the seasonal pattern of HFMD in Hong Kong (Figure 3). As of 23 May, there were 112 cases reported in 2015, which is higher compared to 91 cases reported for the same period in 2014 (Figure 3).

Macao (China)

As of 31 May, 1,415 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macao for 2015. For the week ending 31 May 2015, there were reported 101 cases which is lower than the previous week (n=164) (Figure 4).

Singapore

As of 23 May, there were 111,972 cases of HFMD reported in Singapore for 2015. From 17 to 23 May 2015, there were 855 cases of HFMD reported, higher than the number of cases reported in the previous week (n=782) (Figure 5).

Viet Nam

For the period 1 Jan to 24 May 2015, there were 18,004 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam including four deaths. Compared with the same period in 2014 (26,924 cases including 2 deaths), the number of reported cases has decreased by 33.1% and number of deaths increased by 2 cases. During week 21st (from 18 to 24 May 2015), there were 774 cases including 2 deaths (1 in Lam Dong province and 1 in Tay Ninh province from previous week) reported from 62 of the 63 provinces. Approximately 70.4% of the cases are from the South. There is an increase of 34 cases (4.6%) compared with the previous week (Figure 6).
