DOH Dragi prijatelju,
starih i novih kuhinja. Stare kuhinje imaju štednjake za drva i ugalj. Te štednjake domaćice mrze i oni brzo iš~ezavaju. Sve se više upotrebljavaju
elektri~ne sprave, narocito štednjaci i rešoi na kojim je lakŠe i brze kuhati.
To prouzroči s vremena na vrijeme prekidanje struje.
Veseliti će me ako vam ovi podaci budu bili od koristi. Biće mi milo, ako vam mogu uciniti neku uslugu.
Pozdravlja Vas
Vaš prijatelj, John

Note 26.1 AdJectives and Adverbs: Comparison
,
,
U poređenju sa novim, stare kuce imaju vece i svetlije sobe.
U~li smo u mnogo 1 starijih i novljih kuća.
The comparative may be made by several suttlxes, one ot whlch ls /-lj/,
Teletina je najskuplja, a jagnjetina i govedina su najjeftinije.
The superlative is made by the addition of In~jl to the comparative.
Inajl
isa separate word, and the comparative form after it retains its stress, but the two are regularly written together. Compare:
"
nov star jef'tin
'new' loIdi
Icheap I
novijI starijI jef'tlnijT
'neweri 'olderi Icheaperl
... I
najnovijX n~jstarijT na:jjef'tlnijI
Inewestl 101destl Icheapestl The sentences above also show that other suf'f'ixes, as well as changes in the shape of the root or stem, may be involved in comparative forms. Compare
IskUp1jxI
and Iveć~/. The suf'f'ixes used to f'orm the comparative areI-ij-I
(Note 26.1.1),
I-J-I
(Note 26.1.2) andI-š-I
(Note 26.1.3). Regular f'ormations and those with slight changes are treated in one of' these three categories.Forms having completely dif'ferent shapes are discussed in Note 26.1.4. A few adjectives may have two comparatives, one with
I-J-I
and another withI-ij-/)
some have no suf'f'ix (see Note 26.1.2).
Comparative f'orms have no long vowels except f'or those of the final endings
(I-II, l-al,
I-~/,I-rh/,
etc.). See examples below.Adverbs on the same bases have the same forms in the comparative and su- perlative as adjectives, with a neuter singular ending.

"
rano
bad poor early
lošijI slroma.ilnijT ranij@
worse poorer earlier
The most common suf'f'ix f'or the f'ormation of' the comparat1ve is
1-1j-1
(although many of' the statistically most frequent words take other sUf'fixes).
I-ij-I
is followed by the regular (def'1nite) adject1ve endings(I-tl, l-al,
I-~/, etc.). Examination of the comparat1ve forms shows that
1-1j-1
1s regularly added to bases of more than one syllable. It 1s also added to many bases of only one syllab1e. However, many 1f not most one syllable bases take theI-J-I
suf't1x (see Note 26.1.2).
Bases with movable
/al
lose thelal
before1-1j-I,
as /sv~tao/ - /svetliji/.The stress of an adjective with I-ij-/ regularly falls on the syllable preceding
I-ij-I
(asljef
tini but Ijeftlnijr/, Isiromašan/ but /siromašnijI/).Examples of some of the adJectives and adverbs which have occurred and which have /-ij-/ in the comparative are given in the list below. (The adverbs are indented.) As all syllables but the last are always short in the comparative
(see above), a base having a long vowel in the simple form has a short one in the comparative: Ihladan/ but /hladnijr/.
