Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region

This surveillance summary includes information from countries where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.

Northern Hemisphere

China (No Update)

As of 31 May, there were reported 630,391 cases of HFMD, including 26 deaths in China for 2015.

From 1 to 31 May 2015, 304,863 cases of HFMD had been reported, 42 % decrease compared with the same period in 2014 (n=528,777). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2015 is following the seasonal pattern displayed in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (Figure 1).

Japan

As of 21 June, there were 69,163 cases of HFMD reported in Japan for 2015. Since 12 March (week 11), weekly case numbers of HFMD surpass the numbers seen in previous years (Figure 2). For the period 15 to 21 June 2015, there were 11,018 cases reported compared with 1,824 over the same reporting period in 2014.

2 Countries/regions in the tropical zone

Hong Kong (China)

The weekly number of hospital admissions from sentinel sites is decreasing, following the seasonal pattern of HFMD in Hong Kong (Figure 3). As of 20 June, there were 190 cases reported in 2015, which is higher compared to 148 cases reported for the same period in 2014 (Figure 3).

Macao (China) No Update

As of 21 June, 1,623 cases of HFMD have been reported in Macao for 2015. For the week ending 21 June 2015, there were reported 161 cases, which is lower than the previous week (n=273) but higher than the same period in recent 4 years (Figure 4).

Singapore

As of 20 June, there were 14,778 cases of HFMD reported in Singapore for 2015. From 14 to 20 June 2015, there were 541 cases of HFMD reported, almost as same as the number of cases reported in the previous week (n=540) (Figure 5).

Viet Nam

For the period 1 January to 21 June 2015, there were 21,165 cases of HFMD reported in Viet Nam including 4 deaths. Compared with the same period in 2014 (34,714 cases including 2 deaths), the number of reported cases has decreased by 39.0% and number of deaths increased by 2 cases. During week 25th (from 15 to 21 June 2015), there were 559 cases with no deaths reported from 62 of the 63 provinces. Approximately 69.2% of the cases are from the South. There is a decrease of 110 cases (16.4%) compared with the previous week.
