Award of the Down Syndrome research prize
Following the recommendation of the Down Syndrome Research Prize Foundation Committee at the Fiftieth Session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, the Regional Committee decided to award the Down Syndrome Research Prize to Dr Ekram Abdel Salam (Egypt) for having successfully achieved all the qualifying factors necessary to be awarded the prize.
These achievements include specialized training in medical genetics and contributions to medical research and training at graduate and postgraduate levels. Dr Abdel Salam contribution to research in Down Syndrome is considerable. She pioneered the establishment of clinical cytogenetics in Egypt and has received national recognition for her services in genetics and molecular biology. She is involved with national and international committees in the field of genetics and related areas. Through active engagement with the community, she has promoted and established community societies and foundations on Down Syndrome and other handicaps in children. She has published books on genetics and contributes to raising community awareness through television and other media.
At the Fifty-first Session of the Regional Committee it will be the pleasant task of the Chairman to present this prize to Dr Ekram Abdel Salam.
