AWARD OF THE FIRST DOWN SYNDROME RESEARCH PRIZE

Following the recommendation of the Down Syndrome Research Prize Foundation Committee at the Forty-seventh Session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, the Regional Committee decided to award the Down Syndrome Research Prize to Dr Sadika Ali Al-Awadi (Kuwait) for having successfully achieved all the qualifying factors necessary to be awarded the prize.

These achievements include conducting valued research in this field and publishing the results in medical and other scientific journals; promoting and establishing specialized centres to treat patients with Down Syndrome; providing special medical services to patients with Down Syndrome to enhance their capabilities; integrating people with Down Syndrome into the community; and providing material and moral support to the families and staff working with these patients. Most notable is Dr Al-Awadi's achievement in developing the personal and cognitive abilities and skills of people with Down Syndrome to enable them to attain a high level of education, helping them to undertake normal life routines and to serve others with Down Syndrome.

At the Forty-eighth Session of the Regional Committee it will be the pleasant task of the Chairman to present this prize to Dr Sadika Al-Awadi.
