Award of the Down Syndrome research prize

Following the recommendation of the Down Syndrome Research Prize Foundation Committee at the Fifty-second Session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, the Regional Committee decided to award the Down Syndrome Research Prize to Dr Anna Rajab (Oman) for having successfully achieved all the qualifying factors necessary to be awarded the prize.

These achievements include establishing clinical services for therapy, diagnosis, rehabilitation and other services related to Down syndrome, including surveillance, capacity-building and leadership in Oman.

Her experience covers the field of obstetrics, internal and neonatal medicine including research and prevention in clinical genetics.

With the assistance of the Ministry of Health, Oman, Dr Rajab established the Cytogenetic Laboratory where information is collected and analysed on the prevalence and geographical tribal clusters of Down syndrome in Oman. The molecular studies are being conducted in collaboration with the Genetic Unit of Hamboldt University, Berlin.

She has published and/or participated as co-author on 33 articles on genetic diseases in international journals.

At the Fifty-third Session of the Regional Committee it will be the pleasant task of the Chairman to present this prize to Dr Anna Rajab.
