Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean Sixty-second session

Provisional agenda item 8(c)

EM/RC62/INF.DOC.12 August 2015

Award of the Down Syndrome Research Prize

The Down Syndrome Research Prize was established in 1999. The Foundation was established for the purpose of awarding a prize to one or more persons who have made an outstanding contribution in the field of research related to Down Syndrome and a grant to one or more persons for research to be undertaken in the same field. At its tenth meeting, which was held during the 60th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean in October 2013, the Down Syndrome Research Prize Committee decided that none of the nominees met the minimum score required for the award. The Committee also endorsed changes to the process for the evaluation of nominations. Although the award is normally made every two years, the Committee decided to issue a call for nominations in 2014 based on the revised criteria. No nominations were received and so the Committee did not meet in 2014. The Committee will hold its eleventh meeting during the 62nd Session of the Regional Committee in October 2015 to consider nominations. The selected laureate(s) will receive the award during the 63rd Session of the Regional Committee in 2016.
