Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean Sixty-first session

Provisional agenda item 9(c)

EM/RC61/INF.DOC.10 August 2014

Award of the Down Syndrome Research Prize

The Down Syndrome Research Prize was established in 1999. The Foundation was established for the purpose of awarding a prize to one or more persons who have made an outstanding contribution in the field of research related to Down Syndrome and a grant to one or more persons for research to be undertaken in the same field. Following the recommendation of the Down Syndrome Foundation Committee at its tenth meeting, held during the Sixtieth Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, the Regional Committee decided not to award the Prize for 2013. The Foundation Committee also recommended revision of the process of evaluation of nomination and proposed changes will be shared with the members of the committee for endorsement at its meeting during the Sixty-first Session of the Regional Committee. Although the Down Syndrome Research Prize is normally awarded every other year, the Committee also recommended that a call for nominations be sent out in 2014 to be awarded in 2015.
