Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean Sixty-third session

Provisional agenda item 9(c)

EM/RC63/INF.DOC.9 September 2016

Down Syndrome Research Prize for 2017

1. The Down Syndrome Research Prize Foundation in the Eastern Mediterranean Region was established in 1999. The Foundation was established for the purpose of awarding a prize to one or more persons who have made an outstanding contribution in the field of research related to Down Syndrome and a grant to one or more persons for research to be undertaken in the same field.

2. At its eleventh meeting, which was held during the 62nd session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean in October 2015, the Foundation Committee for the Down Syndrome Research Prize decided that none of the nominees met the minimum score required for the award. The Foundation Committee also decided to revise the criteria for selection. Proposed changes have been shared by the Secretariat with the members of the Foundation Committee for endorsement. A call for nominations will be issued in 2017 based on the revised criteria. The Foundation Committee will hold its twelfth meeting during the 64th session of the Regional Committee in October 2017 to consider nominations.
