AWARD OF DR A.T. SHOUSHA FOUNDATION PRIZE

Following the recommendations of the Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Committee at the Forty-seventh Session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, the Executive Board awarded the Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Prize for 2001, by decision EBI07(10), to Professor Wagida Anwar (Egypt) for her work in community health and disease prevention, not only in Egypt but also in other countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

As Professor of Community, Environmental and Occupational Medicine, Professor Anwar has contributed to several community-oriented health projects dealing with diseases such as schistosomiasis, infant diarrhoea, bladder cancer and infectious hepatitis. Her achievements in the field of environmental mutagenicity and carcinogenicity are notable, resulting in her nomination as President of the Pan African Environmental Mutagen Society. Professor Anwar has taken part in the preparation, development and implementation of the health sector reform programme in Egypt, and has been one of the major contributors to the Healthy Egyptian 2000 initiative.

The 2001 A.T. Shousha Foundation Prize and Medal will be presented to Professor Wagida Anwar by the Chairman of the Forty-eighth Session of the Regional Committee during the opening session.

The Dr A.T. Shousha Foundation Committee is also scheduled to meet during the Forty-eighth Session of the Regional Committee to consider nominations for the prize for the year 2002, and also to decide on the possibility of awarding a fellowship in the field of public health depending on availability of suitable candidates. In accordance with the Statutes, the Committee shall be composed of the following members: the Chairman and two Vice-Chairmen of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean and the Chairman of its Technical Discussions.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization acts as Administrator of the Foundation and the Regional Director acts as Secretary of the Foundation Committee.
