The majority <if the revisions contained in this pamphlet are from Change Series No, 3 to the National

and appear in hold-face However. also included are a number of additional changes that affect the Code for Residential ConMrl.lction which are in light-face type, Changes from Change Series No, I and 2 have heen incorpurated inlO the second printing (November 1972) of the Canadian Code for Residential Construction.

(RESIDENTIAL STANDARDS)

The Associate Committee on !he National Building Code recommends that the following revisions based on Change Series No.3 to the National Building Code and a number of additional changes that affect the Canadian Code for Residential Construction only be inserted in the second printing (November 1972) of the Canadian Code for Resi-dential Construction.

In the first line of the definition for "fire stop flap" replace "fire separations" with "assemblies required to have a fire-resistance rating and" .

Delete definition for "noncombustible" and substitute:

"Noncombuj·tible (as applying to an elementary building material) means that such material conforms to CSA B54.1-1972, 'Specifi-cation for Determination of Noncombustibility in Building Materi-als'."

In the sixth column, opposite the entry for "Stud wall framing (load-bearing membersr .. insert the grade designation "Stud" between "Standard" and "No.2".

Delete and substitute:

"When the size of, and cunnections for structural members are not given in this Code, the memhersand their connections shall conform to Part 4 of the National Building Code of Canada 1970, except that design live loads and deflection limits shall conform to 4B to 4F." Delete anJ substitute:

"Except as provided in (4). every dwelling unit shall have a kitchen counter at least I ft 10 in. in depth providing at least 141/2 sq ft of work surface. including the area occupied by the sink. and 6 lineal feet of cabinet front. Counter work surface depth greater than I ft

10 in. shall not be included in calculating the required area." Delete and add new Articles 5E(4) and 5E(5) as follows and change former 5E(4) to read 5E(6):

In the first and second lines change "CGSB 82-GP-l (1964)" to read "CGSB 82-GP-la (1972)". In the third line change "CGSB 82-GP-2 (1964)" to read "CGSB 82-GP-2a (1972)".

In the first line after "sJde lights" add "greater than 18 in. in width". Delete and renumber former Articles 8B(2) to 8B(4) as Articles 8B(1) to 8B(3), respectively.

Delete and substitute:

"Except as permitted in (5) and (6), a handrail shall be provided on at least one side of stairs less than 44 in. in width, and on two sides of stairs 44 in. in width or greater."

Add new Article 8G(l5) as follows and renumber former Article 8G(15) as 8G(16):

"Balustrades or guards around exterior balconies shall be designed so that no member, attachment or opening located between 4 in. and

36 in. above the balcony floor will facilitate climbing." Delete and substitute:

"Except as provided in 9F. the minimum aggregate width of exits at ground level shall be not less than one unit (see (6» per 90 persons. The minimum aggregate width of exits. other than at ground level, shall be one unit per 30 persons."

In the second line add the words "each of' before the word ·'its". Delete and substitute:

"In a building having an occupant load of over 100 persons, every exit and public corridor shall be provided with emergency lighting." Delete last sentence and substitute:

"Where incandescent lighting is provided, lighting equal to 1 W per 10 sq ft of floor area shall be considered to meet this requirement." In the seond line change "Part 3" to read "Part 6".

Delete Articles 10E (1) to 10E(8) and substitute new Article 10E(1) as follows:

"Where a wall, floor or roof assembly is required to be of noncom-bustible construction, comnoncom-bustible elements shall be limited in conformance with the requirements in Article 3.1.4.5. in Part 3 of the National Building Code of Canada 1970." Renumber 10E(9) and 10E(10) as IOE(2) and 10E(3), respectively.

Delete and substitute:

"Combustible drain, waste and vent piping shall not be used in a

plumbing system within a building where part of the system is located within or passes through a fire separation, except that where drain, waste and vent piping penetrates through a vertical fire separation, the piping on one side of the separation may be combustible, provided the combustible piping is not located in a vertical shaft or in a fire separation."

In the second line change "NFPA 1971" to read "NFPA 82-1972".

Add new Article IOK( 13) as follows:

"At least one refuse chute shall be provided in every building exceeding three storeys in building height."

In the third line change "Article 3.1.7.1. in Part 3" to read "Article 6.2.4.9. in Part 6".

Delete and substitute:

"A door between an attached or built-in garage and a dwelling unit shall be tight fitting and weather stripped to provide an effective barrier against the passage of gas and exhaust fumes, and shall be fitted with a self-closing device. A doorway between an attached or built-in garage and a dwelling unit shall not be located in a room intended for sleeping."

Delete and substitute:

"The limiting distance shown in Table IOC may be reduced provided it is not less than the square root of the aggregate area of unpro-tected openings in an exposing building face."

Revise the third sentence to read:

"Where the limiting distance is less than 2 ft, the exposing building face shall be clad with noncombustible material."

Delete and substitute:

"The exposing building face of a detached garage that serves one dwelling unit only shall have a fire-resistance rating of at least % hr, except that no fire-resistance rating is required where the limiting distance is 2 ft or greater. The exterior cladding of such garages is not required to be of noncombustible material."

In the second line change "ASTM E-90-66T" to read "ASTM E90-70".

Add the following at tbe end of the article:

"In localities where termites are known to occur, all stumps, roots and other wood debris shall be removed from the soil to a minimum depth of 1 ft in unexcavated areas under a building."

Delete.

Delete and renumber Article 14A(4) as 14A(3). Revise first line to read:

"Drain tile and drain pipe used for foundation drainage shall conform to the following:"

In the fourth line change "ASTM 65" to read "ASTM C412-72".

Delete Note (l) and substitute:

"(I) Sizes are based on columns spaced 10 ft O.c. For other column

spacings, footing areas shall be adjusted in proportion to the distance between columns."

In the third line after "omitted" add the words "in localities where termites are not known to occur".

Add new Subsection 161 as follows: "I. JOINTS

(1) In localities where termites are known to occur, joints between slabs-on-ground and foundation walls, and spaces around pipes, conduit or ducts that penetrate such slabs shall be filled with bitumen or other filler approved for this purpose."

In the third line change "%-in." to read "¥I-in.". In the fourth line change "31,4-in." to read "3-in.".

Add the following at the end of the article:

" ... , except that in localities where termites are known to occur, the clearance shall be not less than 18 in., unless the joists are pressure treated with an approved chemical that is toxic to termites". Delete the first two lines and substitute:

"Where the interior finish of the exterior walls of a building is a type which may be damaged by moisture, exterior masonry walls, other than cavity walls or walls that are protected for their full height by a roof of a carport or porch, shall be parged on the interior surface and covered with".

In the third and fourth lines change "CGSB 9-GP-2(1951)" to read "9-GP-2a(1911)" and "Sheathing" to read "Cellulosic Fibre". At the end of the article add the following:

"or CSA BI49.2-1969, 'Installation Code for·Propane Burning Appliances and Equipment" and Supplement No.1, 1911". In the first line after "firebrick" add the words "asbestos cement". In the first line change "A..~TM C315-56(1965)" to read "ASTM C315-56( 1912)".

In the first line change "ASTM C64-61" to read "ASTM C64-12". Add new Article 21C(4) as follows and renumber existing Articles 21C(4) and 21C(5) as Articles 21C(5) and 21C(6), respectively: "Asbestos cement chimney liners shall conform to CGSB 34-GP-Ilb(1910), 'Pipe: Asbestos Cement, Flue'. Such liners shall not be used where the flue gas temperature exceeds 100°F."

In Column I, Items 2, 3 and 4 change "O.0129-in." to "O.OI3-in.", and in Item 6 change "O.0259-in." to "O.021-in.".

Delete and substitute:

"W ood framing members that are not pressure treated with a wood preservative, and which are supported on concrete in contact with the ground or fill, shall be separated from the concrete by at least 2-mil polyethylene film, 45-lb roll roofing or other approved dampproofing materials, except that such dampprooting is not required where the wood member is at least 6 in. above the ground." In the first line after "wire nails" add "or common spiral nails".

"Except for heating supply ducts serving not more than one dwelling unit and encased in concrete slabs-on-ground. heating supply ducts shall be noncombustible or shall be Class

Combustible ducts in concrete slabs-on-ground that are connected to a furnace suppl)' plenum shall be located not closer than 2 ft from that plenum. and not less than 2 ft from its connection to a riser or register. At the beginning ofthe article delete the words: "Except for pipeless and floor furnaces".

"( I) Except as provided in (2) and (3). at least one elevator shall be provided in every building which has dwelling units above the third storey. and in buildings in which the vertical distance from the ground level at the main entrance door and the floor of the uppermost dwelling unit exceeds 24 ft. Where there are exterior stairs or a platform at the main entrance. such vertical distance shall be measured to the bottom of the stair or platform.

(2) At least two elevators shall be provided in buildings which have more than three dwelling units on the seventh or higher storey, or where the vertical distance between the main entrance door and the floor of the uppermost dwelling unit exceeds 50 f1. Where there are exterior stairs or a platform at the main entrance. such vertical distance shall be measured to the bottom of the stair or platform. (3) At least one elevator shall be provided in every building which is specifically designed to accommodate elderly per'lons above the second storey, or where the vertical distance from the ground level at the main entrance door to the uppermost floor level designed to accommodate elderly persons exceeds 15 ft. Where there are exter-ior stairs or a platform at the main entrance. such vertical distance shall be measured to the bottom of the stair or platform."

In the second line add "appropriate" before "requirements". Delete and substitute:

"Every entrance to a building except a patio door shall be served by a walkway or a system of walkways. except that not more than two walkways need be provided to a building. A combined walkway-driveway may be used where the building exit serves not more than two dwelling units."

Add new Article 4OC(3) as follows:

"In areas where seeding or sodding is specified. the requirement in 40C(2) shall also apply."
