La grippe en Europe pendant l’hiver 1946-47.
P e n d a n t la période étudiée, dans les 19 p ay s qui o n t fourni des renseignem ents spéciaux, l’incidence de la- grippe a v arié en tre l’é ta t de quasi-épidém ie etcelui de l’absence virtuelle.
Il est donné ci-après u n résum é de la situ a tio n s u iv a n t la ré p a rtitio n géographique des territo ires intéressés.
E u r o p e d u N o r d - O u e s t. — Seule p arm i les pays Scandinaves, la Suède a subi au d é b u t de 1947 une expansion considérable de la m aladie, 25.000 cas environ a y a n t été signalés dans les parties centrale e t m éridionale du p ays p e n d a n t les 5 prem ières sem aines de l ’année. D ans ce tte quasi-épidém ie, le virus g rippal « A » seul a é té décelé, m ais le ty p e a é té de caractère bén in et la m o rta lité insignifiante.
Le D an em ark , la F inlande, ainsi que la Norvège, n ’o n t pas observé d ’extension anorm ale de la m a ladie. D ans les Pays-B as, aucune épidém ie ne s ’est pro d u ite.
E u r o p e d e l ’O u e st, d u S u d - O u e s t et d u S u d . — E n Belgique, 10 à 15 p o u r cen t de la p o p u latio n o n t été a tte in ts en jan v ier-fév rier p a r une grippe de form e bénigne d o n t l’ag en t causal — de faible virulence — a donné u n e m aladie d ’une durée de 5 à 8 jours avec m o rta lité négligeable (1 décès de grippe en jan v ier). P e n d a n t l’h iv er de 1945-46, on a v a it co n staté d u ra n t 6 sem aines une incidence croissante d ’une form e de grippe égalem ent bénigne due au v irus «B »; la poussée é ta it déjà en voie de résolu
tio n en janvier-février. E n A ngleterre e t dans le P a y s de Galles, des cas de grippe à v irus « A » o n t été co nstatés cet hiver, en nom bre re la tiv em en t élevé, m ais d o n t l’incidence est loin toutefo is de re p ré se n te r u n e épidém ie. Ces cas o n t été de faible virulence et irrégulièrem ent rép artis. L a m o rta lité n ’a p as été im p o rta n te , comme le m o n tre le fait que, dans les 126 grandes villes d ’une pop u latio n globale d’environ 20 millions, il n ’y a eu, p e n d a n t les deux prem iers mois de c e tte année-ci, que 1066 décès a ttrib u é s à la grippe contre 1821 d u ra n t la période correspondante de 1946, alors que la poussée grippale é ta it causée p a r le virus
« B ». Il y a lieu d ’observer que le virus « A » isolé cet h iv er é ta it, au p o in t de vu e antigénique, quelque peu différent de celui isolé lors de poussées a n té rieures en A ngleterre. d inavian countries Sweden experienced in th e early p a r t of 1947 a considerable spread of th e disease, some 25,000 cases in th e cen tral and so u th ern areas of th e c o u n try h av in g been re p o rte d during th e first 5 weeks of th e year. Solely concerned in th is near-epidem ic was influenza v irus “A ” , b u t th e ty p e proved to be benign and th e m o rta lity insignificant. D enm ark, F in la n d an d N orw ay alike record no evidence of u n d u e prevalence. In th e N eth erlan d s th e re was no epidemic.
W e s t, S o u t h - W e s t a n d S o u t h E u r o p e . — In Belgium 10-15 p e r cen t of th e p o p u latio n suffered in Ja n u a ry -F e b ru a ry from a benign ty p e of influenza of w hich th e causal agent — one of low virulence — produced a 5-8 d a y s’ illness w ith negligible m o rta lity (one influenzal d e a th in Ja n u a ry ). D uring th e w in ter of 1945-46 th e re was for 6 weeks an increased prevalence of an equally m ild form of influenza due to th e v irus “B ” ; th e o u tb re a k h a d alread y subsided in J a n u a ry - F eb ru ary . In E n g lan d an d W ales th e p resen t w inter lias uncovered no epidem ic b u t a m inor prevalence of virus “A ” influenza, p a tc h y in d istrib u tio n a n d of low virulence. T h a t th e m o rta lity w as u n o b tru siv e is reflected in th e fact t h a t am ong th e 126 g reat tow ns, w ith a pop u latio n of ap p ro x im ately 20 m illions, influenza d eaths n u m b ered in th e first tw o m o n th s of th e c u rren t y ear b u t 1066, as com pared w ith 1821 in th e corresponding period in 1946, when th e influenza o u tb re a k was occasioned b y virus “B ” .
