AFR/RC31/R14:
The Regional Committee,
Bearing in mind the resolutions1 defining the following three programmes – Expanded programme on immunization, international Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade, Malnutrition Control – as priorities for the period 1981-1990;
Noting that these programmes represent three of the eight main components of PHC;
Recognizing the relevance of these three programmes for attaining the social objectives of health for all by year 2000,
1. INVITES Member States to:
(i) set up or strengthen multisectoral mechanisms to coordinate efforts to promote PHC and the three above-mentioned programmes;
(ii) develop and strengthen PHC activities as part of national plans for integrated development, with particular emphasis on the expanded programme on immunization, drinking water supply and sanitation, and sanitation, and malnutrition control;
(iii) promote community participation in the planning, implementation, management and evaluation of these programmes in a spirit of self- development;
(iv) make use of the mechanisms and resources for technical and economic cooperation among developing countries (TCDC and ECDC);
2. REQUESTS the Director-General and the Regional Director to:
(i) provide maximum support for the implementation of these three programmes in Member States;
(ii) make every efforts to secure from the international community, organizations of the United Nations system, the development banks, etc., the extra-budgetary funds that are essential for supporting national efforts.
