Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region
This surveillance summary includes information from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are routinely reported.
Countries in the temperate zone
China
Between 1 and 31 January 2018, a total of 34,800 cases of HFMD and three deaths were reported in China (Figure 1).

Japan
The number of HFMD cases reported in week 4 of 2018 was 724. As of 28 January, 2018, there have been a total of 2,533 HFMD cases reported, consistent with seasonal trends of the same period observed between 2013 and 2017 (Figure 2).

In week 5 of 2018, there were 0.6 HFMD cases per 1,000 consultations at sentinel sites. This is compared to 0.3 cases per 1,000 consultations in the previous week. This follows seasonal trends of the same period observed between 2013 and 2017 (Figure 3).

Hong Kong SAR, China
In week 5, from sentinel hospital sites 5 HFMD cases were reported. A total of 15 have been reported in 2018(Figure 4).

Macao SAR, China
A cumulative total of 157 HFMD cases have been reported in Macao SAR during the first five weeks of 2018. There were 15 cases of HFMD reported in week 5, consistent with the 2012-2016 average (Figure 5).

Singapore
In week 5 of 2018, there were 757 cases of HFMD reported. HMFD cases have been increasing since the beginning of 2018 (Figure 6).

The number of reported HFMD cases in week 5 was 478, which was a 10.2% decrease from 532 cases in the previous week. The number of reported HFMD cases admitted to hospital was 237 in week 5, which was an 11.6% decrease from the previous week.
Cumulative number of case for 2018 is 2,743, which is a 16.9 % decrease compared to the number in the same period of 2017. Of these, 1,432 cases were admitted to hospital which was a 31.7%
decrease compared to the number in the same period of 2017.
