Surveillance summary in the Western Pacific Region

This surveillance summary includes informa:on from countries and areas where transmission of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) occurs and case counts are rou:nely reported.

Northern Hemisphere

China

As of 31 July 2016, a total of 1,620,670 cases of HFMD including 151 deaths were reported in China in 2016. From 1 to 31 July, 315,077 cases were reported, lower than the number reported in June (n=452,668). The number of HFMD cases reported monthly in 2016 is following the seasonal paTern observed in 2012 to 2015 (Figure 1).

Japan

As of 31 August 2016, there have been 25,060 HFMD cases reported in 2016. The number of HFMD cases in week 34 of 2016 was 1,934 compared with 1,538 cases reported in the previous week. Overall, HFMD ac:vity is high, and following seasonal trends (Figure 2).

Republic of Korea

There has been a decline in the weekly number of reported HFMD cases from sen:nel sites. In week 35 of 2016, the number of HFMD cases per 1,000 consulta:ons was 11.9, which was lower than 15.8 recorded in the previous week (Figure 3).

Countries/regions in the tropical zone

Hong Kong SAR (China)

As of 27 August 2016, a total of 462 hospital admissions of HFMD have been reported in 2016 from sen:nel sites. In epi week 34, the number of cases requiring hospitalisa:on reported from sen:nel sites was 10, which was lower than the number of cases observed in previous years. HFMD hospital admissions have decreased but are in line with the seasonal trend (Figure 4).

Macau SAR (China)

In 2016 there has been 2,673 cases of HFMD reported in Macau SAR. In week 35, there were 40 cases of HFMD reported, which was high than 27 cases in week 34 (Figure 5).

Singapore

As of week 34, 2016 a total of 30,871 cases of HFMD have been reported in Singapore. And in week 34, there were 948 cases reported, which was higher than that observed during the same period in recent years (Figure 6).

Viet Nam

As of 31 July 2016, there were 20,438 cases of HFMD and no deaths reported from 62 of 63 provinces in Viet Nam. In week 31, 523 cases were reported with no deaths. The number of cases in the Southern region accounted for 65.5 % of all cases reported in the country (Figure 7).
