3.8.1.6. Freins à l’adoption du semis direct
Les conclusions du paragraphe 1.4 conduisent à considérer le semis direct strict comme pratique de travail du sol potentiellement stockante dans certaines conditions. Les autres TCSL n’induisant pas de stockage suffisamment significatif, même dans l’horizon 0-30 cm. Mais cette pratique reste pour l’heure très limitée. Les freins à l’adoption du semis direct strict en Europe ont été analysés dans la revue de Soane et al. (2012) et sont évoqués dans Carter (2017) pour les agroécosystèmes en climat tempéré. Ces freins sont d’ordres agronomiques et économiques. Sur le plan agronomique, la préoccupation première porte sur l’impact de l’adoption du semis direct sur le rendement.
Les études d’envergure sur l’impact du semis direct strict sur le rendement sont très rares (Pittelkow, 2015a, 2015b). L’enquête Agreste porte sur l’impact des techniques sans labour dans leur ensemble. En climat tempéré, cet impact (qui affecte la production de biomasse susceptible de retourner au sol) est faible : de 0 à -5% environ pour un passage du labour au semis direct en fonction des cultures. Paradoxalement, les cultures de printemps sont un peu moins sensibles que celles d’automne (hors colza) dans les résultats Agreste 2011 (respectivement +2,4 q/ha et +4,2 q/ha en labour). La variabilité de ces résultats est cependant forte entre types de sol et il faut les considérer avec beaucoup de prudence. Ainsi, la pratique du semis direct sur des sols limoneux hydromorphes est plus limitante pour le rendement que dans les sols argilo-calcaires.
Vient en second lieu le problème posé par la gestion des adventices. Sans surprise, on relève en TCSL un emploi plus important de traitements herbicides, que ce soit pour la destruction des couverts intermédiaires ou pour le contrôle des adventices. Cela est confirmé en France par l’analyse des résultats Agreste 2011. La comparaison des différents IFT (Indice de Fréquence de Traitement) dans cette enquête montre qu’en non-labour il y a 0,04 point de plus pour le traitement des couvertures intermédiaires ; 0,37 point supplémentaire pour la gestion des adventices et 0,17 point en plus lié à l’emploi du glyphosate. Par contre on observe une consommation d’engrais et un IFT hors herbicide un peu plus élevés en labour. Il y a tout lieu de considérer que le problème de gestion des adventices est plus ardu encore lorsque l’on supprime complètement tout travail du sol.
Enfin, le troisième problème est la réussite de l’implantation des cultures, toujours plus délicate en semis direct où le semis se fait sur un sol encombré, souvent moins drainant et sans préparation d’un lit de semences (hors la ligne de semis). Cela est tout particulièrement vrai pour les cultures de printemps.
Sur le plan économique le passage du labour au semis direct strict signifie le plus souvent un changement complet de l‘équipement pour l’implantation des cultures avec l’achat d’un ou de plusieurs semoirs spécialisés voir de matériel spécifique pour la gestion des couverts lorsque ceux-ci sont adoptés avec le semis direct. Cet achat implique un investissement conséquent, mais aussi un changement assez radical du système de culture (adoption de couverts permanents, modification des successions de culture, des dates d’intervention, modification du programme de désherbage). C’est donc un changement de rupture qu’il faut mettre en place dans le système de production, ce qui n’est pas le cas avec le passage à des formes intermédiaires de non-labour, où le plus souvent l’agriculteur dispose déjà du matériel nécessaire pour effectuer les opérations d’implantation des cultures.
