La thérapie du massage chez les prématurés se révèle efficace dans la réduction du nombre de jours d’hospitalisation en soins intensifs et le recouvrement plus rapide du poids de

naissance. Ainsi, les bébés atteignent plus tôt un poids normal et développent une capacité de vie sans les machines artificielles leur permettant d’intégrer efficacement et rapidement leur milieu familial. Cet état de fait contribue à améliorer la vie du bébé et celle de leurs parents. Ensuite, l’exposition au risque d’infections nosocomiales se trouve réduite. Une partie des résultats de cette recherche correspond aux résultats démontrés antérieurement par d’autres études. Cependant, en ce qui a trait aux problèmes de vision et au pourcentage de décès observés dans les deux groupes, des investigations complémentaires s’imposent. Ces dernières devront prendre en compte, la taille et les caractéristiques d’un échantillon qui pourrait être généralisé à la population entière des bébés prématurés.

En ce qui concerne le développement de l’enfant, cette recherche n’a démontré de différence significative que sur l’aspect du langage expressif et du langage global. Cependant, toutes les moyennes des caractéristiques évaluées sont supérieures dans le groupe d’intervention.

Il est également important de souligner l’effet synergique des différentes techniques devant faciliter le développement des bébés prématurés, comme la pratique de la méthode kangourou et de l’allaitement maternel pendant le séjour dans les unités de soins néonatals ainsi qu’après la sortie des bébés de l’hôpital. Cependant ces mêmes techniques ont été appliquées aux deux groupes à l’étude et la seule différence est liée à l’administration du massage pendant l’hospitalisation. Ceci constitue la force de l’étude d’autant plus que les deux groupes étaient semblables au début de l’intervention.

Somme toute, en lien avec la littérature existante, les résultats de cette étude viennent renforcer les effets positifs du massage chez les nouveau-nés prématurés. Ainsi la stimulation tactile à la naissance contribue à renforcer l’adaptation des nouveau-nés prématurés dans la vie extra utérine, à améliorer leur survie ainsi que différents aspects de leur développement.
