REPORT OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE

WPR/RC28 .• R16 CHANGING TRENDS IN TRAINING The Regional Committee,

Having reviewed the report presented by the Government of New Zealand· l

,

Considering that the subject of training encompasses many components, important among which is the application of recent knowledge in educational planning and technology to the training process;

Recognizing that improvement of many aspects of the WHO

fellowship programme, such as the selection of the most appropriate candidates to follow the most appropriate programmes, the utilization of those candidates on completion of their studies, and their

retention within their own countries (guidelines already existing for the WHO fellowship programme), lies within the administrative machinery of the countries themselves;

1. URGES Membe~ States to accept their full responsibilities in rendering the WHO fellowship programme more effective and to give high priority to implementing the above-mentioned improvements;

2. REQUESTS the Regional Director to convene a meeting at a suitable time and place in 1978 or early 1979 to discuss the scope of concerted regional cooperation in these aspects of health manpower development, to be attended by senior representatives from Member States, with decision-making powers within their national health administrations.

Having considered the statement on diarrhoeal diseases other than cholera made by the Representative of the United Kingdom and the subsequent discussion;

Agreeing to the importance of the subject due to the high mortality and morbidity caused and the interrelationship between diarrhoeal disease and malnutrition;

1. REQUESTS the Regional Director to stimulate interest among Member States in preventive measures, treatment, the training of

relevant health personnel and research through all appropriate
