Model reduction, data-based and advanced discretization in computational mechanics
Foreword
The present volume groups a choice of contributions issued from the biannual encounters of the Franco–Spanish scientificcommunityofcomputationalmethodsinappliedsciencesandengineering,heldinJaca(Spain).Duringthisthird workshop(after the two first, heldin Jaca in2013 andBiarritzin 2015), wetook theopportunity topay tributeto our colleagueandfriendPierreVillon,ontheoccasion ofhisretirementandsubsequentappointmentasemeritusprofessorat the“UniversitédetechnologiedeCompiègne”(France).
Therangeof topicscoversavivid scopeofrecentresearchsubjects,on thefrontierbetweenapplied mathematicsand computational mechanics. The contributions range from the fundamentals of solid mechanics, and PDE revisited, through the physical interpretation of numerical models, mathematical foundations of reduced-order modeling up to methodologicaldevelopmentsintimeandparametricdomains.
The issueincludes eleven contributions from both sidesof the Pyrenees. Model orderreduction methods play a fun- damentalrole inmany ofthem. For instance,proper generalizeddecompositions (PGDs)are the main topicofthe works byA. Leon andcoworkers, who presenta PGDversionbasedupon wavelets,orofthecontribution byP.Díez etal., who describeanalgebraicversionofPGDs.
More fundamental issues ofmodel orderreduction are covered inthe contributions by A. Falcóetal., who present a geometrical interpretationofreductionofdynamical systems,or theworkby C.Paillet etal., whoanalyze thepossibility ofemploying PGDforproblems witha large numberof parameters.A. Madraet al.presenta work ondiffuse manifold interpolation,whileA. Cosimoetal.presentaworkonhyper-reductionmethods.
Application ofmodel orderreduction toindustrial processes isthe main topicof theworkby N.Bur et al.,while, on amoregeneralsetting,A.BoujelbenandA.Ibrahimbegovicpresentapaperonfiniteelement formulationforlargestrains innonlineardynamics,E.Nadalandcoworkersdiscussthephysicalsense offractionalderivatives, whileM.H.Malik etal.
proposeanewformulationofparametricdynamicswithinthePGDframework.Finally,J.Yangetal.presentaworkonthe applicationofTaylorseriestothederivationoffundamentalsolutionstoPDEs.
