AIMANTATION DANS LES CHAMPS FORTS
ET APPROCHE A LA SATURATION ABSOLUE DU NÉODYME ET DU DYSPROSIUM
Par WARREN E.
HENRY,
U. S. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D. C., U. S. A.
Abstract. 2014 Magnetic moments have been measured directly, by a sample motion ballistic
method on neodymium and dysprosium. For neodymium, difficult to saturate, the measu- rements were made in magnetic fields up to 70,000 gauss and at temperatures in the liquid helium region. At 1.3 °K and 70,000 gauss the measured moment is 1.5 Bohr magnetons per atom of
neodymium and the extrapolation yields not more than 1.65 Bohr magnetons per atom as com-
pared with 3.3 Bohr magnetons per atom calculated from quantum numbers. The small rema- nence increases between 4.2 and 1.3 °K.
The absolute moment measured for dysprosium at 1.3 °K and 78,000 gauss is 7.6 Bohr magne- tons per atom. The remanent moment increases from 0.04 Bohr magneton per atom at 140 °K to 0.67 Bohr magneton per atom at 1.3 °K.
ion,
on mesure directement l’aimantationprès
de lasaturation, quand
lapola-
risation est voisine de 100
%,
à1,3
OK et dans unchamp
extérieurégal
à 60 000 gauss parexemple [1]. Quand
approximatif
de la mesurede la
susceptibilité
en utilisant la loi deLangevin.
2° On
peut
effectuer une doubleextrapolation
pour estimer
approximativement
[3]
ont aimanté lenéodyme
dans un
champ
de 18 000 gauss à4,2
OK et ils onttrouvé seulement
0,75 magnétons
de Bohr par atome. Pour ledysprosium,
Trombe a trouvé dansun
champ

avec J ==9/2,
L = 6 etS

conventionnellement,
doit être10,6 magnétons

DISCUSSION
Mr..Kittel. - It would be
interesting
to estimatefrom the
approach
to saturation theanisotropy
energy of
dysprosium
as a function oftemperature
and to compare this withtheoretical
expectations.
Of course this
suggestion
is notapplicable
if themetal is
actually weakly antiferromagnetic.
Mr.
Henry.
- We have not carried out thisanalysis
butplan
to examine our data to see if wecan deduce the
anisotropy
energy from our results.Mr. Bozorth. -- How do your results on
dys- prosium
compare with the recent results insingle crystals
obtained at Iowa Stateby Legvold
andSpedding ?
Mr. Henry.
- The saturationmagnetization
for
Dy
measuredby Elliott, Legvold
andSpedding along
the easy direction ofmagnetization
ishigher
than 1
reported
here. Thatis,
1 obtained 7 . 6 Bohr magnetons per atom ofdysprosium
whilethey
obtain 8.5 Bohr magnetons per atom at lower fields.
They
obtain this valueby multiplying
their raw data
by 4 Jr.
Should we get différent results ?Mr. Lock. -
Neodyrnium
becomes antiferro-magnetic
at about 7 OK and it ispossible
that fields much greater than 80 000 gauss arcrequired
toattain saturation.

Mr.
Henry.
--- We shallapply
an additional10,000
gauss to theneodymium
to see if theslope
becomes
sufficiently
small to make a more validextrapolation.
These measurements have been carried out in a Bitter type magnet four inches indiameter. We
plan
tomodify
ourapparatus
so asto use our one inch magnet which will allow us to
apply a
field of110,000
gauss. This limitation of the moment may be acrystalline
electric field effect and notantiferromagnetism.
Mr. Pratt. - Dr.
Henry’s
data shown for themagnetization
vs.applied magnetic
field for neo-dymium
showed certain fluctuations for fields in the range above15,000
Oe at 4.2 OK. These fluc-tuations
may be very significant
indetermining the
role
played by
the conduction électrons in thecoupling
of the4f
electrons on different atoms.The
strength
ofthis 4 f -s coupling depends
on thedensity
of conduction electrons at the Fermi level.Oscillatory effects due to the Landau levels are of
course well known at
high
fields and low tempe-ratures. If the
eff ective
mass of the conduction electrons issufficiently low,
one should expect tosee such fluctuations as observed
by Henry.
Mr.
Henry.
- Thank you for your comments, Dr. Pratt. We shall further examine and extendour data so as to
permit
a définitiveanalysis,
to seeif the effective mass and other parameters
permit
an oscillatory variation in the
