FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT APRIL 7, 2019

5th Sunday in Lent

"The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle." The episode of the woman caught in adultery is a powerful story. We have perhaps all felt as the woman has at some point in our lives, surrounded by those who would condemn us. The beauty of Christ's mercy at the end is clear and a wel- come relief as we all struggle to be good and holy people. But have we ever imagined ourselves on the edge of the circle? Have we pictured our- selves in the sea of dusty robes? Perhaps, we hope, we're hovering at the edge of the circle of judgment. But we've all been there.

How easy it is to be righteous when someone else's reputation is at stake. When the small child is acting up in the grocery store or on the plane. When another company has a scandal break or a major error sets back their profits. Could it be easy to pick up the stone and feel its weight and heft in our hands? Because if we've got a stone in our hands, our own righteous category is clear. Our judgment is our insurance that we won't be on the receiving end of the criticism. If we can point out a wrong, sure- ly we are firmly in the right.

"'Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her' ? they went away one by one." This Lent, not only are we invited to receive God's mercy, but to show God's mercy. As the season begins to wind to a close, consider those in your life you tend to judge the most harshly. What is one concrete way you can drop your stone?

We are all called to repentance. Open your heart to God's personal invitation to growth!

Just a reminder that our annual Card Party will be conducted this afternoon in the school gymnasium. Food and refreshments will be served and many wonderful door prizes will be raffled off.

This event is a fundraiser for our school that is being run very well by our Principal Mrs. Kraetke and her excellent staff of teachers. I hope to see you there.

As Holy Week and Easter are fast approaching I want to remind you that Penance Services will be held on

Monday evening, April 15th at 7:30 and again at 1:00 in the afternoon the

following day. Easter schedule in on the front page.

As we listen to the touching story of the woman about to be stoned by those who judged her, we are told that Jesus twice got to his knees and began to write on the ground. We are not told what he wrote. One could suspect that he was revealing the sins of the woman’s accusers, but what did he write the second time?

St. John suggests that he was writing directions for this woman how to live her life, now that she had been forgiven. Interestingly these are the only written words that we have from the hand of Jesus and they must have been erased by the footsteps of those standing by.

As we prepare for the great events to come, let us all remember those powerful words of Jesus, “ Neither do I condemn you” And in that hope, we can claim our salvation and walk in his grace.

My prayers are for all of you each day at Mass.

Msgr. Moloney

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

Because they have been blessed by a priest and therefore are holy objects, the palm braches used for Catholic Church services, especially those used on Palm Sun- day, should not be disposed of in the regular fashion.

Once an object is blessed, it is considered to be in the service of God and should be treated with respect.

Therefore, it is considered sacrilegious to throw a holy item in the garbage, where it might end up in a sewer or a landfill.

Holy palms shoud be retured to nature. Some churches may collect the old palms for disposal for the worshippers. It may be kept as a holy item.

Should you wish to dispose of it, you must BURY IT or BURN IT and spread the askes on the ground out- side; or you can drop off in the vestibule of any Cath- olic Parish.

Reclaim Love During Lent

Parents, during this Lenten season, let's pass on to our children the real meaning of love...the love that God has for us! Here are some simple ways to do this: Look at the Crucifix...Begin conversations about love by looking at Jesus on the cross. Ask Him for guidance and point to Christ's sacrifice as you explain how "selfgift" is an integral part of loving another person. Discuss ways that each of us can sacrifice not only for a spouse, but for our brothers and sisters, relatives, friends and classmates. Volunteer together...Put your family discussions into action by practicing love of neighbor through volunteering. Depending on the ages of your children, a variety of opportuni- ties exists. Older teens may be able to serve at a soup kitchen with you, while younger children can visit people who live in nursing homes or are shutins. Read stories about the saints...The saints demonstrate a variety of ways to love God and others and many of the saints were friends during their time on earth! Look at the way that siblings Sts.

Benedict and Scholastica cared for each other. Read how St. John Bosco mentored the young St. Dominic Savio. As you strive to grow in love of God, encourage your chil- dren to bring their friends with them on this journey. Spend time with Jesus in adora- tion...St. John the Evangelist famously notes that "God is love" (1 John 4:8), so take your children to spend time with Our Lord in our chapel that offers adoration Monday thru Friday from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. Also, on the first Fridays of the month from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. Together, as they sit in the presence of Jesus, members of the fam- ily can ask God to help them love Him and one another more. This time spent with God can help prepare us for heaven where, as St. John Paul II explained in his Theolo- gy of the Body teachings, together we will be facetoface with God in perfect com- munion. Pray the Rosary...Take 20 minutes of

your evening, praying the rosary together as a family. Honoring the Blessed Mother can cer- tainly bring us closer to God.

As we learn about and grow in our under- standing of love here on earth, we prepare for eternal life with God. By taking small steps with our children today, both children and adults can rediscover what it truly means to love God and one another. Some information taken from: the February Take Out pamphlet.

Thought For The Week

"Lent comes providentially to reawaken us, to shake us from our lethargy." Pope Francis

Men's Retreat ± October 2019

This past weekend Monsignor Moloney preached about “Godmoments” that can clarify His presence in our lives. When have you had your last God Moment? Jesus promised us so many gifts, but do we believe “I” am blessed with His gifts? God mo- ments in my life?

God is present when we slow down enough to listen; in silence God speaks and al- lows us the joy of knowing His presence in our life and experience.

Please consider taking 40 hours this October to be silent… in the comfort of a beautiful retreat center called St. Paul of the Cross. It has acres of secluded walks for medita- tion, private rooms and baths, wonderful meals, insightful talks and lots of silent time for rest and prayer. Your family, our Church and world needsyouto be a man of God.

As a parish, we men go on the 2ndweekend in October, though men or women can self register on the website to any weekend. If you would like to learn more, please give one of us a call below, or check out St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center website

Camp Sancta Maria is honored to have a role in the process of forming young Christian lives.

At Camp Sancta Maria, your son will experience 1 ± 2 weeks full of fun, personal growth and spiritual devel- opment in a technology free zone.

Their time at camp is filled with activities for every- one: horseback riding, swimming, ropes course, sports, arts and crafts and more.

But most importantly, their time at CSM balances out the physical activities with a strong spiritual environment, with campers attending daily Mass, praying the angelus and having quiet time to reflect on their relationship with Christ.

CSA Minute: Priestly Vocations

High school men who are freshmen, sophmores and juniors will experience Sacred Heart Major Seminary and learn more about the priesthood at a discernment overnight next weekend.

This shorter version of the Office of Priestly Vocations’ discernment weekend is structured specifically to give high school students a look at seminary life. Held twice each academic year, the experience features presentations, time for reflection, and op- portunities to pray, eat, and recreate with current seminarians.

Your CSA gifts help the Archdiocese of Detroit encourage vocations to the dioce- san priesthood. Besides discernment weekends and overnights, the office offers region- al discernment groups, retreats, vocation days for junior high students, and outreach to parishes and schools.
